On my 2015 90 .... not sure if I am imagining this issue... but when I picked up the truck from the garage after the new clutchfix clutch / ashcroft shaft / ashcroft lt230(with ATB) I am sure there is more noise coming through from the engine bay. The backlsh and clunking is much much better though which is why it went in for the work.
it almost sounds like there is a panel missing under the carpets - sounds like more road noise, more gearbox/bearing noise and definitely more diesel rattle. its worse under load and any revs. I noticed it was a lot louder as soon as I started the car before taking off but thought I was imagining it. Would it be likely the transmission tunnel panels have not been fitted/sealed correctly and its letting in noise? possible the gear lever weights are rattling? (they were fine when the car went into the garage) the original clutch was stuffed - all the springs were loose and can be moved by hand and wobbled about. One worrying point is it took 1.5ltrs of gearbox oil to top up the main gearbox!! Full LR service history, it was in for a replacement adapter shaft in April as well. No leaks under the car at all so no idea why it was so low. But it drove (apart from the backlash) perfectly well and nice and quiet before it went it. Under cruise/no load/clutch pedal down its quiet as a mouse and there is no whining. I find it hard to believe the LT230 is so much noisier if its a full rebuild from Ashcroft so I want to eliminate anything else before I contact them. Clutch bite is 0.5" off the floor but I'll adjust the rod on the master cylinder - they bled it three times over 2 days and they could not get it better than how it is now. Any thoughts? Mike |

I rather thought that might be the case, it's not the first time it's happened!
A very poor show if it was a Landrover specialist, though, and actually it's pretty sloppy for any garage just to assume that the filler plug is also a level plug. |

Yep it's a LR specialist. Mentioned they see a lot of pumas with low gearbox oil....

you state you noticed it was noisier as soon as you started it, if its noisier in neutral when stationary then its nothing to do with the transfer box or adaptor shaft as they are doing nothing and are stationary, its unlikely to be the gearbox as not much is happening in there so its probably either the clutch is noisy for some reason (unlikely) so probably a panel, floor seal or sound proofing issue, or there may be something loose underneath like the exhaust DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Mike - will be interesting to see what you find. I have the same issue with noise after clutch change (and also low bite point).
I’ve not investigated cos I’m hoping to sort out the sound system at some point in the future which will involve taking out the front carpets etc. I might put some extra soundproofing in at the same time if I don’t find anything amiss. 2012 110 XS SW Orkney Grey 2003 D2 Td5 Black [SOLD] |

I'm guessing it could still be the transfer when in neutral (assuming it's moving) as the transfer box will be moving if the wheels are spinning.
there's a foam figure of 8 where the levers enter the cabin - has this been damaged / bits missing / not even replaced? |

clutch sorted - just needed to be further bled. See how it goes.
As for gearbox oil - garage confirmed that it was not filled up to the filler hole. He assured me it was filled up level with the level plug which is further down the box....... after a quick google I can now confirm as mentioned above there is no level plug! i wonder what was removed!? will speak with garage on Monday as closed now. checked the weights on the lever - all solid, no movement. the gearlever itself is a bit sloppy, well the shifter mechanism itself in the top of the box. Feels like the ball is a bit worn, you can wobble the gear knob around about 1" without any resistance. Is that repairable in a puma without getting a full slickshift or similar? I know the R380 has a replaceable nylon piece on the end of the gearstick. thanks Mike |

A little worrying that a specialist is possibly topping up everyones MT82s to the filler! Best check with them and maybe hand them a copy of the manual.
I've seen a few posts about the plastic ball splitting and causing issues. If you're pulling it apart it should only be 4 bolts to get the whole assembly out to inspect. I'll see if I can dig up the post. Might be a perfect opportunity for a slickshift though! That's even more worrying. There is nothing lower than the filler, but there is a plug much higher than the filler.
I wonder if they're filling through the top hole (which isn't the filler) and using the filler as a level. There is no level plug on an MT82! |
