Oops... that was from the Puma brochure. Similar claims were stated in the brochures for the Td5 and the tdi and the 90-110 models. Someone forgot to tell Gerry McGovern Rolling with laughter 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

As a pricing exercise go on to the Land Rover UK website and build a Discovery Sport.

Build it to you basic spec and prefered engine then go back and add a few nessecary extras that you need then add on a few cheeky extras.

I got one build to £70K.......for a Discovery Sport!

As there will be no aftermarket support for a while all accessories will have to come via the sales brochure and even those will be the ones you can already buy for the other vehicles in the range + a teddy bear.

Would be nice if they matched the US Jeep Mopar accessories and upgrades and not just a bulb kit, umbrella and boot tidy.

From memory the following have been seen, tube bar, winch, roofrack, sliders, 3x hd recovery points, underbody protection, front bash plate, smaller steel wheels. Jerry cans are rumoured? Not a bad start.

“The suspension hardware is related to the stuff on those other cars, but it’s very differently applied and tuned,” Deeks goes on. “Steel coils are standard fit, air suspension is optional. But we’ve got special controls monitoring the adaptive dampers, for example, to ensure they don’t overheat when working really hard. If you have the air suspension, we reckon the car is better able to keep its wheels on the ground and its body clear of obstacles than it would on rigid axles anyway.”...


There’s a testing rig used by Land Rover during the development of its modern cars. Company engineers refer to it as ‘6DOF’, which, as Deeks explains, stands for Six Degrees of Freedom. It is, in effect, a very advanced, electronically operated, giant robotic tool than can move a car through every dimension in which it can be moved, either on the road or off it. The six degrees in particular, if you’re interested, are heave, surge, sway, pitch, yaw and roll. Sadly, Kevin Bacon is not involved, but all you’d need is a Ronan, Robbie or Romeo and you’d have a winning boy band line-up, I reckon.


“The testing mileage we do in person, here on the Developing World but also on Tarmac handling courses, on special surfaces like Belgian pavé, and also during kerb strikes, jumps and bottoming impacts, is logged digitally. For ‘L663’, our ‘6DOF’ input calibration was tougher and more punishing than any we’ve used before. Then we feed it into the computer and the rig repeats the inputs, putting the equivalent of 150,000 miles and a decade of extreme stresses and strains into the car, running 24/7, in a matter of weeks. When it’s finished, we tear down the car, see where the weaknesses are and redesign or respecify as necessary.”...

I guess I was secretly waiting / hoping for a reveal. Any of the current electronically controlled Range Rover's / Discovery's can do the same on a controlled course.

Would have been more fun to show it at an Ultra 4 event with Jim Marsden at the wheel. Jeep put the Gladiator on the Everyman Challenge before it's release and it finished before the cut off time.

Its a bit like Xmas and the let down that follows..... Sad

We all love the Defender. There were bits of it that used to grind like the build quality, leaks, reliability and rust and an interior that would literally get hot enough to cook you and melt items on the floor - even with air con on. There were bits that were just dangerous. Crash and rollover protection worried me a few times on our various adventures. A roll cage would never move the seatbelt anchor away from the proximity to my temple! Damn it looks good though.

There is a load of stuff that will be an improvement. It’s not going to look the same, but I’d have taken all the convenience and safety and power of a D4 over my 110 every time I hit 70mph and headed off on a long run.

So, it’s with an open mind I’m looking at it with great expectation. I extensively tested the new LC Utility and it ticked almost all the boxes bar looks and it was devoid of any character. I want steels though and not 21” wheels Whistle 1951 80" S1 2.0

The looks aren't important for me at all, I'm interested in it's technical capability and markets it is aimed at. I'm still hopeful that a base or commercial model might come along to make a good overlander. LR don't care what I think, because I'm not s new buyer buyer, but 3 to 5 years down the line I'd like something to buy used. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

So there is light at the end of the tunnel. Does this mean that we will all be able to do a strip down (of the car Whistle ) in the back yard?(Some hope, me thinks)
Also I see in another article that there will be no manual gearbox option. That kills my interest completely. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I've decided that I'll probably keep my existing defender for longer, until it rusts away completely, but this is looking like an ideal replacement for my Discovery 4 when I move that on. Majority of use would be daily commutes over potholed country lanes, occasional longer motorway trips, driving holidays to Europe with 5 of us and luggage, camping weekends, dog bus, tip runs. D5 is too swish (and ugly), needs to cope with mud and sand and filth and be easily cleaned/swept out.

With my existing Defender, as things break or corrode or fall off or get damaged, they are fairly straightforward to replace/repair. I don't think the new "Defender" will be designed with home repair/modification in mind. I also worry that all of the testing that has been done will not be in the same manner as the current versions are being used. The videos of the cars in Moab were moving at a snail's pace over quite gentle terrain. My Discovery 4's new front suspension arms needed new bushes after just three or four days driving on bumpy gravel tracks through the Pyrenees. The Defender's live axles and coil springs have taken substantially more of a beating, over a longer extended period and not needed replacement yet. Although the ride on the motorway is not as smooth.

I wouldn't buy a launch vehicle from anyone again, let alone JLR, but it will be interesting to see how these fare in real world use by actual owners, although I don't imagine many in the first year or two will be getting very muddy.
