I had my 110 back in the Tacho centre today for them to sort the speedo, ended up its going to have to have all the speed sensors etc replaced. Anyway, they also informed me that new rules have come out meaning you must mount a tacho within view of the driver whilst seated facing forward - the usual solution in a Defender was in/on the cubby box, or centre tray, other option was passenger side of dashboard underneath the grab handle. All of these fitments are now illegal. So, where the heck am I supposed to have it relocated to? The tacho people are as confused as I am. They have contacted Landrover and they are not interested, local dealer in oxford also couldn't care less apparently, they think the "official" solution is to replace the stereo with the tacho, so, you then have to think where to mount the radio? Can it be mounted vertically?
Any suggestions or ideas most welcome. 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

They can't fit either at the front of the cubby box as it would foul the gearlever, they seem to think the cubby design has changed recently? I don't know as my most recent other Landrover is a 1969 model...
You may be right about the situation if pulled, but I think the Tacho centre (understandably) want to remove any possible liability on their part, in fact the way they were talking it sounds like the rule may in fact be retrospective. 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

I did wonder what the picture looked like. Note that there is no mention of from when this is supposed to apply, hence my installers conclusion that it could be considered retrospective. 2011 110 USW

Is this not what you mean? If the tachograph is activated on or after the 1/10/12, it MUST be a third generation digital tachograph fitted to that vehicle. There is no requirement to retrospectively apply this Regulation, thus, if a vehicle has been fitted with an original 1st generation tachograph already, it may continue to use one in the future. I had a metal lockable cubby with a sloping front and cup holders, the tacho was just clear of 2,4 and 6

Just to clarify that I'm referring to item 2 on the linked bulletin and the poster at the end of the document. Would be interesting to see the reaction of the tacho installers whose work Pete has seen when presented with this.. |

The techo generation is not really the question, they will just come on-stream on the due dates. The question is where the heck do you fit one in a Defender? Its a bit crap to be honest that Landrover didn't consider this when designing the puma dashboard, although in fairness the same problem applies with most Japanese 4x4s too. 2011 110 USW
