JLR did say that Defender would be a range of vehicles, like they already have with RR and Discovery. I would say that a smaller vehicle like that is on the way, sharing the Evoque/Disco Sport platform, but having some variation of the Defender name. I really hope they don't end up with a Russian Doll range of Defender looky-likeys!

Going by the the Discovery and RR line-up, there is a distinct possibility of that happening. Which might not be a bad thing if the smallest one is a sort of Jimny rival. I live in hope. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

True - the current Defender may be tight on shoulder room but there's no escaping the advantages of it's narrowness on country lanes.
I fear that as much as I like the Rivian (and some other big trucks), they would be impractically wide for where I live. A smaller/cheaper Defender (as you say, Jimny-like, maybe just a little bigger) would actually be great! |

I think the Jimny (for a smaller 4x4) and G wagen/landcruiser 70 series are the only true contenders for a rugged 4x4 thesedays

If they can do a basic, small, simple utility version at Jimny pricing, then I'll put down my deposit now.
The trouble is I can't see it happening as it wouldn't fit with their premium pricing strategy. @ diesel_jim. Don't forget the Wrangler in your list! It's probably the closest thing available now to the "proper" Defender. Solid axles. Ladder chassis. Proper transfer box. Removable hard top, doors and a folding screen. Front & rear mechanical diff locks on the Rubicon model. Tons of accessories and aftermarket parts. We may even get the dual cab pick up version over here with a bit of luck. But then again I am biased, having jumped the JLR ship and turned to the dark side |

...True, I forgot the wrangler.... I stopped at the local Fiat/jeep dealership the other week and took a few pics of a SWB & LWB... quite liked them.

Alas, I think you are probably right. I will not knock the new Defender until it has been released and tested by normal people rather than the weirdo car journalists who never seem to understand what I am looking for in a car. If I was in the position to buy a new high end 4x4. Not sure the RR or Disco 5 would be on my list. |
