Crankshaft woes
Not disco this time but defender 300tdi.

It has been getting harder to start and Smokey until warm, classic fuel pump timing problems I thought.......hopefully.

When it was running I could see the crankshaft pulley was a bit uneven, hmm.

On taking the crankshaft pulley bolt out, which was hugely tight, and taking the cambelt cover off I found this,


The crater in the crankshaft is supposed to be a key way, this was also allowing the cambelt pulley to move a bit, hence FP timing out.

I did contemplate new crankshaft and rebuild, but tha5 would cos5 as much if not more than a replacement engine, so I have ended up a bit deeper than hoped this weekend

As ever though, if you rebuild your own engine. You know what you have.
Whereas with another engine, apart from it being at least 21 years old, you have no idea what sort of knuckle dragging gorilla has worked on it.
Similarly, if it is that good an engine, why isn't it in a vehicle? It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten

Yes that was a thought, however it is in a disco with a rotted out chassis so genuine reason for its being, I also know the owner and where he lives Whistle Whistle , so fingers crossed. 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

pretty common fault on them, quick fix bush trick is brass key in and weld it up- remove brass key and bingo Mr. Green happens when the crank bolt isn't tight enough or works lose.
