I have met the guy who owns the company making the chequer plate. He told me it is ABS not metal.

Im guessing it will do the job just fine either way and ABS is lighter and paint doesnt get scratched off etc.

Highways Agency have already bought a number of Discovery 5''s on the cheap so I guess a few will turn up on the road before the customer becomes the beta testers.

I don't care what they are made of but it does look like it might allow a tyre sidewall that is vaguely sensible, hopefully a /70R16 or if not then /70R17 anyway. ---
