Propane regulators and 30 Mbar vs 37 Mbar
Afternoon,

We have a pending Scout camp in Nijmegen where we are taking 50 Scouts, Explorers and Adults. To this end we've got all our kit identified and done a whole load of planning and preparation. Ferry is booked and the 3 allowable Propane bottles are registered however this clearly isn't going to deliver what we need for the 10 days so additional bottles and refilling will no doubt be required.

All of our kit (I understand) works on 37 Mbar propane regulators supplying up to 1.5kg/hr. Talking to local dutch supplier of Propane we've identified that our regulators will not fit European bottles. They can provide us with regulators suitable for their bottles (which we could fit to our gas hoses) but they are set to output at 30 Mbar and 1.5kg/hr

3 questions for the wealth of knowledge that this forum possesses:

1 - Can we run our burners, urns etc at 30 Mbar?
2 - Can we source regulators that fit a European bottle and give us 37 Mbar?
3 - Can we refill our Calor gas bottles out there? One leader has found an adapter to let you do this from an LPG fuel pump which is apparently common practice but I'm un-convinced.

Hoes Errogas is the supplier local to the campsite we are on.

Had to double take I wasn't on the 1st Facebook Scout Group page for a minute.

I took scouts to Iceland and we just used local regulators and bottles while there. However that was on butane camping Gaz stoves.

Filling LPG bottles at a fuel station Europe wide is frowned upon. They'll shut off the pumps if they catch you. It's not illegal but they don't like you doing it so don't rely on being able to refill.

As for the pressure, I doubt 7mbar will make a significant difference to the performance of the appliance but it is probably advisable to get the correct pressure if it isn't for personal use Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

They wont run quite as hot, but if they're anything like our butane burners, they spend most of their time at half anyway!

The urn may need the preheat button holding for slightly longer to get the heat into it.

Miker - that I could work with.

The main appliance that the camp cook wants to use is a No 5 field kitchen converted to Propane.

I have found these which may be the answer to the problem, just need to be confident that the Butane nut fitting will match the "universal" threaded connection on the dutch gas bottles. https://gasproducts.co.uk/gas-regulators/p...r-roi.html

You could always fit a fixed bulkhead regulator on the trailer or whatever you're carrying the cooker in/on. These have replaced bottle mounted regulators in caravans/motorhomes etc... and you can buy a suitable pipe to connect between the regulator and the bottle. You can change between propane and butane just by changing the flexi pipe.

In our camper van, for example, I carry pipes to fit Calor propane and GAZ butane bottles so I can swap between them as needs/weather dictates, butane burning hotter than propane in "summer" conditions and propane for use when it gets colder and the butane doesn't want to come out of the cylinder.

Might not be practical if the cooker isn't fixed to something but if it is...

We use to run a No.5 stove converted to Calor which we ran off 47kg calor cylinders for at least 3 or 4 years.
( we do a lot of Hen & Stag parties.)

Our regulator had a butterfly valve on it to fine tune the pressure- you might be able to find one of these.

We use to spend hours sorting out guests who “ interefered “ with the controls.

As mentioned you can get a 37mbar bulkhead regulator then just have hoses (pig tails) to the bottles, like we do on motorhomes, but you would need the correct ends on the pig tails for the required bottle types

Don’t refill your Calor bottles. It can be done, but it’s not safe, as there is no 80% cutoff which is required for safety to allow the gas to expand should it be required. It’s also bad stuff to play with and ice burns are major. Home filled gas cylinders, childs event, and foreign country sounds like a bad combo.

All your kit will work fine at 30mbar, just may be a bit less powerful/slower. You will get variations with bottled gas anyway due to heat, and altitude.
