France 2008 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Galway Green
I just got my annual bonus and I am considering upgrading to a LT 230 Transfer box with the ATB option.

The recommendation from Ashcroft is. Note : Due to the nature of the ATB diff we do not recommend the vehicle is brake tested on rollers, ask for a decelerometer to be used instead.

Can someone explain to me why this is ? Is it absolutely necessary ? Or is there some way around this ?

Here where I live in France, the nearest test centre with a decelerometer is a two hours drive from here. Looking at their website they are only testing classic cars with cable brakes and they mention nothing about 4x4's. I have also checked the government regs and again no mention of 4x4's.

Naturally I will ask the test centre for a decelerometer test but I may have to explain why, and in French, and I don't really understand the reason for this is recommendation? Probably better if I have at least some idea of what I am talking about !

Frankly it would be much much easier if I ignored the recommendation and did a brake test the normal way at my local test centre on the rollers. Would that break it then ? Big Cry

With a brake roller you have the potential to wind up the diffs and cause damage, not recommended IMO......

If all four wheels are on rollers you won't have a problem. In the UK, test stations only test one axle at a time, which is harmful since the wheels on the other axle are not rotating. This tends to destroy the standard open diff in an LT230, with an ATB there is a probability that the vehicle will fly off the rollers.

I would never allow my Defender to be tested on rollers one axle at a time. My tester uses a decelerometer.

If there really is no alternative, remove the front propshaft and lock the centre diff.

Last time I had mine tested, the station had a two axle roller for the brake test. They also had a very nice four post lift that incorporated a mechanism to rock the steering, which I'd never seen before. Darren

My local test station has four rollers Thumbs Up

I'll still ask for the decelerometer test on the principle of that its better safe than sorry. I wonder what the French for 'transmission wind ups" is. hmmmm

You lot are blommin great, really really great, thank you. Razz

No problem with standard Defender or Discovery 2 here in Czech republic, but I get a scared phone call from local test station - Freelander nicely jumped from brake test rollers and ended in some tool rack. They were surprised. Freelander has viscous coupling instead of center diff, and it was a bit tight. So nearly the same effect as ATB in center diff. The test station was "high quality" - they have not had this problem before with Freelander 2, small difference between viscous coupling and haldex is probably something magic for them.
Different story was Deffender with 3 ATBs - they had to use rollers for the other axle. Again after a small jump of car. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

So for the Controle Technique brake test the French stopped using the decelerometer test several years ago for all vehicles except those that can't physically get onto the rollers. I went to three test centres they all had additional free roiling rollers for brake testing 4x4's. They said that because there are so many different types of transmission available it's not possible to know exactly how every transmission works. So they test all 4x4 the same way with two independent drive rollers and two free rollers. One of the three test centres had an ex Land Rover mechanic so I will take it in there. Once again thank you for the excellent advice guys Very Happy Thumbs Up

Tried to get the math out of the calculator ,but was not able to get the answer.
Would the 1:1 LT230 ratio work whit 18 inch wheels, tuned Tdci?
Use is road only

Thanks
BF Goodrich 265 /65/18
I am interested to try the 1:1 ratio, but wonder if the 18 inch will not be to big.
Ls3 is in planning for end of the year
Order i have i mind for now if it works, restored front/rear dif whit ATB’s
Restored LT230 whit ATB,and 1:1 ratio, could this work for mainly road use?

That wheel and tyre combination are the same over all size as stock 235/85 16's, so won't make any difference on their own. Darren
