Or to be honest, in comparison, it is more or less the same as every other JLR product. If this is truly the finished product then I was hoping for a little more originality something that stood out from the rest of the stable. At least now looking at it for my next car I will have a choice of all the other manufacturers 4x4s, I never thought I would say this but if that is the final then I may not be a Land Rover man in the future. From what i can see so far the new defender will be a nice classic looking SUV. For those who dont like fancy forms, nor meter-long headlights starting from the front doors and ending just in the middle of the grill. I think only time will show if this SUV will earn it's place in the hearts of offroad enthusiasts. For this to happen it should have a solid basic engineering - diffs, axles, tranny etc, and enough aftermarket support from non LR companies. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

I think you're right. Which is a great shame since the Defender was never intended to be an SUV, it was always a multipurpose light truck. Only in recent years did the SUV community decide to start buying them. If you can't unbolt the roof, convert it from a hardtop to a softtop, carry bleeding deadstock in the back in the day then hose it out and go to the pub in the evening in it, fit a cherrypicker or firepump, fit a snowplough on the front in the winter, and so on, then it isn't a Defender. |

Well said Blackwolf.
As far as I'm concerned, unless there is some real modular design flexibility built in that we can't see from the leaks so far, then JLR have lost the plot. I guess we could be surprised : The roof might unbolt. A rag top option could be available. As could a commercial spec. version with plastic mats, manual transmission and minus all the electronics that will go wrong. And there may even be a longer wheelbase version to provide greater storage space in the back.(The current leaked photos make it look as though there might just be enough room in the back of the 5 door for a set of designer luggage and a Chihuahua or two.) But sadly I don't think so. To use diduan's words "the new defender will be a nice classic looking SUV". But knowing JLR's pricing, it will turn out to be a very expensive SUV in a crowded space of the market. I can't imagine many of the farmers or commercial operators in my neck of the woods dumping their Jap crew cab pick ups and returning to Defender ownership in a hurry. Such a shame If Ineos get it right, they could be onto a real winner with Grenadier. |

Yep, but already longer than 10 years ago that has started. Now, the good thing about this is that some of those owners take excellent long term care of their Defenders and will help keep the legend alive. Nothing wrong with that I think. Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

I guess the real world test will be to if the scum steal the new Defender off your drive or continue to nick the original.
Would be embarrassing to get up the next morning to find a badly written note on the windscreen saying 'Meh'. |

I imagine they'll nick the new one too. In fact since it will probably have (the completely unnecessary and pointless) keyless entry and start, it may be even easier to steal than the current one.
I don't think that any vehicle is safe from theft now unless it has a Kahn body kit or is pink. |
