Is it the ignition barrel becoming warn. Sounds similar to a guy on here who kept breaking down in France. Turned out he had a cheap aftermarket ignition barrel that was the cause.

It could be crud in the fuel solenoid power connector.
I had very similar with mine a while back. Disconnected it, cleaned it up, reconnected it and waiting for it to happen again. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper. Wide Track Sankey- In bits- Gone to a new home M0XQS |

There is one wire that goes to the top of the fuel pump which powers a solenoid which only lets fuel flow when there is 12v positive to it. This was what my issue was. I have seen it referred to as either but am happy for someone to put me right on the correct terminology. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Run a temporary 12V supply from battery to the solenoid and if it fixes it then the wiring or switch is the problem, if not then maybe the solenoid itself. However they are pretty reliable.

It's funny how quickly you forget stuff that gets sorted easily. I had exactly the same issue as yourself, but maybe not as 'severe'.
Folk pointed me towards the solenoid and when nudging the connection, while the engine was running, I got the 'cough'. So, I did exactly as Retro has suggested (it was probably him I got the advice from!) and put a cable between the battery and the solenoid. No more coughing. To be honest, it's nice to have the 'diagnostic' approach, but if that crimp connector has been there for any length of time I'd just replace it straight away. Crimping on a new one takes seconds, a wee bit of sandpaper on the solenoid terminal, and you're good to go. If that doesn't work, then I suppose the connector inside the cable could be broken somewhere, but a new and separate wire would then help eliminate that. Can't have an old girl like Millie getting a cough! My old (new) one did similar... which lead to me selling it as it was the second time it let me down!
Where the bulkhead white block connector is (on the pedal box), the thick white wire is the stop solenoid wire. It had corroded in the block and was coming away and stopping the fuel. May be worth having a look around there. I had no tools with me and Dan from DT Engine Solutions graciously came out to my rescue. Although raiding my bosses garage at 10pm for connectors and wires helped also. Click image to enlarge |

I had a issue with the bulkhead connector, just driving along and engine cut out. no feed to the stop solenoid. Traced the wire back to the block, live feed in but due to corrosion in the block no live feed out. Fixed it by just bypassing the block with a new piece of wire job done.
