Many thanks that's very good of you. Looking at the diagram it appears I need to wire back to relay R181 and R117. Do you have access to any diagrams that show where these are located if not it seems I will need to make up a loom ?

Hi,
(Sorry for my English because I’m french) I want also to install an Airco coming from a Defender TD5 99 to my Defender TD5 06 but it looks like the pics you posted has disappeared. May you post them again? I really would appreciate it. Thanks a lot in advance! |

technically, you don't need to get the AC unit to talk to the ECU.
Pro: When it's wired to the ECU, the ECU can control when to "request AC clutch" and when to "request AC fan". When the driver turns on the AC, he "request AC" to the ecu via the 12v AC request at high. The ECU then checks the operating conditions like engine temperature and engine rpm. If the temperature is ok and the engine is not labouring, the ecu will then "request AC clutch" and then "request AC fan". If the engine temperature is high, the ECU can also use the "request AC fan" to aid cooling If the engine rpm is high, then it will not immediately "request AC clutch" When "AC clutch request" is made, depending on the RPM, there's a table in the ECU map to inject more fuel and it tapers down around 4000rpm. Con: Let's not complicate the install as you will need to mess around with the ECU pins and such to get those to close the correct relay. If using a manual AC unit, when the AC clutch and fan are on, the ECU will already know how to compensate for the drop in RPM when idling so there's no adjustment to do. Having a separate AC system from the ECU is easier to isolate if something goes wrong. The defender has migrated, leaving the owner behind. |
