If anyone knows the oil pressure data for a Td5 that would help?

80,000 isn’t really a premature failure, the turbo can last a lot longer but it depends on how it’s been treated over the life of the vehicle.

Hardly an issue. Just change it.
Also 3k oil changes are excessive. Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

It’s been treated far better than most. First owner a friend had it serviced every 6k. I’ve done it every 3-4K using Morris oil and genuine filters. I religiously change the oil as it’s cheap and it doesn’t do any harm. Prematurely was the wrong word but it’s the only td5 I know which has had a pampered life suffer turbo failure at such low miles.
I have worked on td5’s for the last 6 years and only changed one turbo at 130k the rest were over 200! If something fails I like to find out why, especially as this vehicle has been meticulously looked after it’s entire life! If it had been ramped and never had regular oil changes I wouldn’t be surprised or concerned about a cause. I’ve been looking at the alive hybrid turbo but is it really worth it ? What would you guys do, fit a new standard garret unit or upgrade it to vnt or hybrid ? |

Thanks Jim!
We do have the data at work but not back until end of week and I’m keen to check it. Cheers Alex |

If the Defender is shut off regularly after driving without several seconds for the turbo to spool down it can hasten the degradation of the bearings. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

I’ve always allowed time for it to warm up and to spool down. I’m guessing the last owner did as he’s mechanically minded, I will ask. I’m going to check oil pressure today, if that’s fine and the oil feed is clear it’s down to the turbo alone and not a result of something else failing.
It has been remapped like a most td5’s and by a well known and respected tuner, so I’m confident it’s not related. |

Oil pressure good. Slightly higher the spec at just under 4 bar at (cold) idle and 1.5 (hot).

I youre considering an new turbo a hybrid is a big difference! Though needs mapping to suit.
I understand wanting to know why/how it failed but sometimes items just fail. Sounds like everything that can be done has been done. How do the oil feed and drain look? Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

Yes, I’ve been looking to upgrade the turbo for a while. Never expected for the old one to fail! Alive do a hybrid at £1300!!! Or allisport do one at £1000. Do all the hybrid turbos and vgt turbos require a boost control box?
I’m thinking of taking the intercooler off and cleaning it? Worth doing, I fitted an allisport one at Christmas! I think dropping the sump might be a bit anal? But then do the oil pump bolts come loose on late td5’s?? Best stuff to clean intercooler ? Normally use brake cleaner. Cheers Alex |

Sump dripmis anal.
IC clean can be worth it i also cleaned my inlet manifold. Try TD5inside, Jose is busy as hell but it was sub £1k for a turbo and map! No you dont need a boost box for a better turbo but if you boost iver 18psi youll hit limp mode you want one but done need one. If yiu catch my drift. They also do uprate MAP sensors (i have one) so no need for a boost box. Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

Will look into it. I noticed Alive offer a 12 month warranty on there’s and everyone else only offers 3!
Anything better to clean the intercooler out with? I will flush with forte and drop the oil out again once new turbo fitted. |
