New rear Gwynn Lewis Propshaft but getting vibrations
Hi

Fed up with replacing UJ’s on the prop and a having a bit of play in the spline , I decided to buy a wide angle HD propshaft from Gwynn Lewis as they come highly recommended.
Anyhow, just fitted it and no sooner had I picked up drive I felt a reverberating through the floor, we’re talking 1mph .
Then took it for a spin on the road at around 30mph and the reverberating is still there when under load . It’s fitted the correct way with splined end facing forward, UJ’s and flanges were already fitted to the new shaft . It almost feels like I have to give it a bit more welly as well but that may be psychological, given it’s a heavy bit of kit !
Any ideas on what I could have done wrong ?

That had crossed my mind but I wouldn’t have thought it would show it at pick up speed.
When I popped the new one on I fitted the handbrake drum end first, when I went to do the axle end I realised I was 90 degrees out . Rather than take it off again , I popped the diff into neutral and rotated new prop so it would align .

No that won't have made a difference. Do you have play in either the output shaft/flange on the TC box or the diff flange? That can make em vibrate 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

A small amount in both but i wasn’t particularly concerned about that as had far worse in the past

Take the prop off and drive it in diff lock see if it still vibrates. Refit nuts to hold drum on with no prop. For 10mi s work this will tell you if issue is with prop or either flange.

Vibration at 1mph? I am surprised anything is moving fast enough in drivetrain for that, engine related vibration for such low speed vibration, mounts? Engine or gearbox? Cheers

Thank you JST , it was absolutely vibration free with the old prop, the only way it could possibly reverberate going so slowly is if the new prop isn’t seated flush against the flanges , perhaps I unwittingly got a piece of grit in between when fitting !

You should try re-greasing it too. There could be an air pocket somewhere causing the grease to stay to one side or towards one side of the UJ’s. Mine (standard prop) is always a little like that after re-greasing then sorts it’s self out after a while.

I had a great chat with Glynn , he went out of his way to be helpful and to try and fault find my vibration . If anyone is in any doubt whether to use his products I would say just do it , you don’t get after sales care like that from many companies nowadays!

I think we established that it’s hugely unlikely to be the new prop causing the reverberating but due to its extra weight it’s exaggerating an existing issue.

I’ve put the old one back on and it has appeared to eliminate the vibration , I have no idea why this could be? Any pointers welcome. I’ve pondered the following.

Transmission to chassis mounts
Centre diff failing (slight click on pickup, when turned by hand)
Handbrake drum (inspected but not sticking)
Rear diff failing


New halfshafts
Tyres are balanced and at 30psi
Checked that the diff lock is disengaged by jacking a front tyre, which it is.

If anyone can add anything please feel free as none of the above are particularly apparent faults

Please bear in mind that the reverberations are felt from 1mph upwards but only when under load (accelerating) . Also felt like I was having to give it a bit more oomph to get going but maybe psychological!! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

I would try to do the following tests

1) 4 wheels off the ground and check if you can "see" the vibration

2) Remove front propshaft and see what happens

I this wide angle propshaft also designed with UJs out of phase? Puma 110" SW

Thank you for the reply , I’ll try and get all four wheels off the ground , although I think I’d rather do it on a ramp rather than on axle stands .
The new prop is also out of phase but by a different degree to the genuine LR prop. The below photo shows the difference . The other ends are positioned squarely by the way !

Then I would mimic the LR phase and see what happens. Of course after you mark the original position.
