Bottle Jack

Hi all,

I've been doing a number of jobs on the 90 recently and noticed that it doesn't have a bottle Jack or any other accessories if they come with them (my 2 td5 discoverys bith came with bottle jacks, wheel chocks and removal tools).

I've done a search and the standard LR bottle Jack seem to have mixed reviews regarding quality etc.

Are there any recommended alternative ones whether later model or aftermarket ones?

Do I need to get any equipment / parts to fix it all in with so its not hitting into the battery when driving?

People buy a disco 2 bottle Jack and find somewhere secure to keep it.

I buy Mercedes Sprinter bottle jacks, similar, but better.

Thanks Greeni, do the Mercedes Sprinter ones not fit in the seat box?

In what way are they better?

They're more heavy duty. Not tried to fit it in my seatbox, one side is full of fuel tank, the other electrical science.

The standard LR bottle jack is exactly the same as that issued for the Disco 2. Perhaps your thinking of the Defender pillar jack, which is complete rubbish? Darren

Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter bottle jacks have the same saddle type axle support as a Disco or Defender jack and are usually rated by 1 or 2 tonnes higher capacity.

Very often available much cheaper on Fleabay..... Ian

Those Merc ones aren't any good if you have a flat tyre, which is kind of important! Due to the body size. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Hi LRA, thinking about it, it was a pillar Jack that was getting the mixed reviews.

Steve when you say body size do you mean size of the actual Jack i.e. it won't give you the height required to lift a defender?

Do the Mercedes ones come in different sizes maybe?

I think he means the body is taller so won't go under the axle if the tyre is flat. That's easily solved though, put your spare in front of the flat & drive up onto it, once the wheel is jacked up enough you can slide the spare out & swap them over - an old off roaders trick

In my experience, it just works. I had a flat on the offside, i.e. the thicker end of the casing, of my old 90 and was able to squeeze a Sprinter jack under the axle casing to change the wheel. Darren

Yes, the Merc version is a bit taller. That doesn’t mean it’s no good but can give you a few issues as mentioned above.

How much height they extend though and how they compare I don’t know.

Personally I’m quite happy with the LR version.

I bought a new sprinter one, picked up on eBay for £35 👍

The Merc jack is just the right size to fit in the battery box, and the handle (borrowed from a trolley jack) fits neatly alongside.

No problems lifting my 110 with a flat.
