serious engine probs....broken down!!
hi all,
puma broke down today, had to get LR assistance out. i started it this morning and the engine idle was extremely erratic going between 600-1500rpm Shocked set off to work and it was like a kangaroo below 2000rpm, above that it sounded terrible as in a really loud diesel knock and it wouldnt rev above 3000rpm.
got to work and it wouldnt start once i switched it off. lr technician came out and plugged in to it, he said there were zero fault codes, eventually it started for him and he couldnt find anything on his laptop but he suspected the notorious EGR valve sticking. BUT. Embarassed . i didnt tell him i pressure washed all the underneath of the 90 yesterday particularly around the fuel tank to get rid of all the mud, could i have got water in the fuel tank via a breather? OR i also added some millers diesel treatment and tanked up with fuel on the way home last night.
i dont believe in coincidence so could i have Censored my defenders engine? its at the stealers now and i wonder if i should tell them all this or keep quiet? Whistle . i will just have to put up with this brand new disco4 until they fix it. has anyone had the same symptoms?
thanks in advance for any replies.

I've used millers before, every tank for a couple or three months and had no issues at all - for that matter, no noticeable benefits either, but you should be able to rule it out as a potential issue...

I don't think pressure washing the underneath would cause a great deal of water to enter the fuel tank even if you managed to find the tank breather and hit it square on and left the lance there for a minute or two, but could all that mud you removed have restricted/blocked the tank breather? Confused I use forte diesel treatment with no issues and I'm sure millers would be the same. The symptoms you describe could be the EGR valve stuck open but that should throw up a DTC but a restricted tank breather wouldn't . It could also be the High pressure fuel rail (really loud diesel knock), fuel rail regulator or injectors but these all throw up DTC's. Have you been wading recently? Did the tech check the Turbo modulator, EGR, MAF plugs and the injector harness?

Look on the bright side-all is well now. Very Happy Bet you get some stick from the Mrs. every time you stop to fill up. I can just hear it now-"Make sure it is diesel, Dear."Bet that after hearing that five or six times you will be thanking Land Rover for putting the wheelbrace in such a secluded spot. Some good has come out of this. You learned a lesson and you will never make that mistake again. Everyone does it once (or more). I did it in an escort van, temping at university years ago. It went down like a ton of sh*t with the boss.

I know diesel fuel pump nozzles are fatter than petrol ones and therefore don't fit in petrol fuel tanks, but as for the other way round, there's an invention worth a few quid. Being a father of two under 4's, I'm thinking red triangular nozzles for diesel and green square nozzles for petrol Rolling Eyes

I take it there have been no further instances other than yourself , it wouldnt be the first time the station has gotten the tanks/pumps mixed up. 2011 Defender XS 110 Station Wagon - Rejected

you may well experience problems later down the line, the TDCI engine does`nt like petrol through it, my mate gets quite a few through his garage and says that if people notice straight away that they have filled up with petrol and stop the engine they normally get away with it, but if they drive any distance and especially if they drive till the engine stops they will have trouble immediately or not long after. problems are usually high pressure pumps and injectors, i did the same with my transit but luckily twigged after 200 yards and fingers crossed its been ok. i hope you get away with it as i know pump and injectors are not cheap. LIFE`S TOO SHORT TO DRIVE A BORING VEHICLE

Indeed, since the pumps rely on the lubricity of the diesel for lubrication. I would recommend you start running your landy with 2-stroke oil for added lubricity just in case. JASO-FB or FC spec at 1:200 ratio, add it before you put diesel in. --

Already exists and LR are fitting the device to the Disco4s. Haven't quite worked out how it works yet but if activated it completely blocks the filler and will just make the petrol pour back out! 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

Yes my range rover has one - it stops missfueling by locking off the tank the moment you put the wrong nozzle in - you then have to get the tool out of the boot Mike
