My first Defender - a TD5 90 hard top
I recently bought my first Defender - a TD5 90 hard top - for weekend fishing trips. My son and I have been spending our Saturdays making it look a bit more presentable.

I think it's in OK shape for its age and looks fairly solid, with only one small bit of corrosion to fix. It drives OK. There's a Synchro SlickShift installed and a Twisted straight through exhaust. I've also had it remapped by Alive to make it a bit nippier.

We fitted a pair of Corbeau seats the first weekend which made quite a difference to comfort and leg room. That was followed by a Momo wheel, wiper motor, cubby box, some Mud side panels, LED interior lights, full sound proofing and a carpeted rear.

Last weekend's job was fitting a new double din head unit and some Focal speakers in the front and rear. We used a Raptor double din conversion and fitted a Sony XAV-1000 with Apple Carplay. It was, to be honest, a bit of a nightmare to install and didn't fit the Raptor dash so we ended up putting it behind the panel, which hopefully will stop anyone nicking it!

We also changed the door seals to try and stop a leak (rather fiddly) and installed a new Mass Air Flow sensor (surprisingly easy).

Next on the to-do list is fitting some carpet finishers, new hinge bolts, a reversing camera, subwoofer and to treat a bit of what I think is galvanic corrosion.

Thanks for the kind words. Really enjoying playing with it.

This weekend we've tidied up the rear cross member and towbar with some Buzzweld Chassis In One, added some new Bosch AeroTwin wipers and fitted some shiny new door handles.

We also finished carpeting the rear. We originally bought a carpet set from Lucari Solutions but it wasn't the best. The carpets sections were different shades of grey and it was cut wonky and didn't fit. They did offer to send some new pieces but we decided to use Veltrim instead. It looks much neater. (It's going to live under a rubber mat most of the time I suspect, but it does look nice!)

I've made a few more mods to my 90. Quite pleased with it now.

Got the subwoofer and tweeters installed. They made a massive difference. Even with soundproofing, you still have to have it cranked up to be able to hear it over the engine.




I had to get my garage to install the carpet finishers from LRI. They were apparently quite a challenge to install and were interfering with the doors closing correctly. They look pretty decent when fitted, though.

I swapped the orange bulb side repeaters for clear LED ones and added an ORE steering guard.



The best mod though, not shown, was a clutch pedal assist spring. It's made it much lighter on the left leg!
