Defender. I can't see much else beating them off road when it comes to it, disco and RR very, very capable but way too heavy and complex, at least in a Defender you won't worry about scratching it! 2011 110 USW

Ah but you haven't defined "best" willy
For sheer capability I'd have to say defender. Discos have bags of technology and are clever etc but they just can't go where defenders can go for reasons of ground clearance, width and sheer usability. and to be honest, I think the new landcruiser kicks the arse of a disco offroad never mind what the specs of both say, it's a far simpler machine, much less to go wrong and on a long remote trip I would FAR rather be in the landcruiser if there was the choice of both. yes the disco is more comfortable, but when I drove it I found it to be very numb offroad, you have zero feeling through the wheel and the suspension. |

Can't take a D3 off road without a Sump Plate as lower front bumper get wrecked at first incline/decline. Mud guards also get ripped off in ruts..

I wouldn't call a LC simple - inlaws (and grandparents in law) have had loads - pretty complex machines and not as reliable as many claim. All have been owned from new.
The grandparents in law (if there is such a thing) were considering chopping in their 54 plate VX Amazon for the current model but the service they received was appalling. A bit leftfield but a Suzuki Jimny on decent tyres will go almost anywhere - even places a Defender won't - thanks to it's light weight, excellent approach and departure angles and solid Jap build quality. We upset many a "proper" off roader in ours and also didn't give a cr4p about it because it cost naff all; a major asset when offroading! Also had a few modern bits a Defender lacks - airbags, heated electric mirrors, a superb turning circle (you can three point turn one almost anywhere) and a gearbox that didn't snap your arms off. Still prefer the Defender of course - the Jimny was tiny (handy for parking though). Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

went for a drive in a Jimny with my Rugby playing front row son............is was funny we were touching the doors and squashed together in the middle. way too small but i agree they must be great fun off road.
straight out of the box i guess a Defender any day of the week. change the tyres and you would widen the choice to D3/4 and one or two Jap-mobiles. i have alway thought the L200 very good off road but have rubbish turning circles. BM52 |

Pick ups are too light at the back end - Our Geotec Hiluxes got stuck waaay before our 110s due to this issue. Similar with a Defender pickup - back ends struggles. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.
