Daft question to ask on a Defender lovers Forum but;
What in your opinion is the best / most capable 4x4 in completely standard form. For me it's a close run thing between the D3 and a 90 XS, possibly have to go with the D3 due to hill descent and auto box. Interested to see what other vehicles are out there that come closer or better Land Rover. Original Member Pie n Pea Club. 110 HCPU Tipper |

"best" and "most capable" are two different things.
recently here in a local 4x4 magazine they did an extensive test and declared the new Jeep Wrangler to be the "most capable" 4x4... www.ralton.co.za |

I'd say it is definately a Defender out of all current 4x4s.
The Disco is (from what I'm told good) but in showroom spec the tyres would let it down I think. The current Defender has decent tyres - plus in some models traction control - and low first works as well, if not better than HDC. I may be biased - but the Defender just does what you need 'out of the box' John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

Having the opportunity to drive a lot of 4X4 daily I would say the Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 ......
Supreme stately comfort on road and a rugged 4x4 offroad - highly capable on any surface. |

The last test I saw it was Disco then Defender. All that unreliable problematic crap on the Disco that will eventually go wrong gave the Disco the edge because the tester couldn't drive through puddles without mummy gadget holding his hand
Seriously all the gadgets do give them the edge I think - I couldn't believe the Defender getting through the little off-road course at Dunsfold let alone the Range Rover on road tyres |

Non Range Rover drivers may be surprised just how capable they are. Now they have terrain response etc they are no different to a D3 in my opinion.

And surely it would have to be an Autobiography RR anyway?!
RR and Discos really do break down a lot. At least with a Defender, you can fix most things yourself. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

Autobiography's are Vogue SE's with extra leather bits and silly colors
I think reliability is great but that just my experience. Forums are where the problems are as most of the non problem car never get mentioned.... |
