Identify front hub? Incompatible stag / lock washer
Help! I was in the process of replacing my Defender 90 front wheel bearings when I found the stag / lock washer will not fit the hub. The washer supplied in the bearing kit and all photos etc on the internet have a flat, while my hub has a smaller cutout as in the photo? Has the front axle been replaced? Can you help identify what bits I need to get the old girl back on the road?
Any comments would be appreciated
Cheers
Tim

Sorry but I don't seem to be able to upload photos?

IIRC yours is the earlier axle that uses the tab lock washers you mention, same as early range rovers. Think the tab washers changed when the 300tdi came out.
Think you have bought the wrong kit, in that tab washers are wrong, just use the ones you took off, lump hammer and an anvil, jobs a good un.

Part 217353 is probably what you need. The later type is FTC3179.

As above, if in a fix you can reuse the old one. Bend it over in a different place after knocking it flat. However replace it as soon as you can given it’s what locks the nuts that hold your hubs on.

Thanks htb2 and retroanaconda, I think I'll get new tab washers as I now realise that the one originally fitted has the tab missing which I assume sheared off resulting in a wheel bearing that was loosening itself every time I went into reverse. The scraping disc / pads was the give away something was seriously wrong. I couldn't believe that both lock nuts were locked together but could be undone by hand! Quite frightening really, lucky it was the right hand wheel affected being a right hand thread as if it was the left then the only thing preventing a wheel coming off would have been the disc / caliper.

Many thanks for you help,
Tim
