Rear axle lower shock bushes
Should the rear axle lower shock bushes be tight up against the lower shock mount (if that makes sense) when I rock the car, I can see the lower shock rubbers move in and out the mount. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Yes, they should. They wear very quickly, and I have found that sometimes it is helpful to add a penny washer on either side of the mount (put the washers between the two rubbers, not on the outside of the rubbers). This effectively thickens the mount and seems to improve the situation. It also can't be seen at MOT time so it doesn't look as though you're trying to mask defective rubbers.
