If that’s the new Defender then JLR could have saved a lot of money and just kept the D4 going, looks very similar to me.

My take:

I own a Defender because I like the look.

I don't want a Defender that looks like the rest of their range.

I don't want a Defender that depreciates like the clappers.

I don't want a Defender that when bought second-hand, costs the earth in labour and parts and needs specialist equipment to fix it, in the hands of people who charge like a wounded rhino for the privilege.

It will no doubt be extremely electronically competent off road, but it is unlikely to maintain that "je ne sais quoi" they've had since 1948, which makes people love them - and stay loyal to them through adversity.

Did they not realise - or not value that?

I agree it does look very low, no fold down step required to get in and no step stool required to wash the roof Sad

Did the designers not realise that the current Defender wings are used for putting tools and a mugs of coffee. The new design has the protector on the bonnet.

Surely McGovern must have noticed his earl grey, china cup and saucer hit the windscreen when the bonnet is opened or do new Land Rover owners just not look in the front of their cars anymore?

It’s not a clamshell bonnet, you can see the join by the inside of the headlights. Looks like it might still have wing tops we can stand tea on and look at the mad complex engine we won’t be able to tinker with.

Edit: Just followed that line round, looks like wingtips are rounded/minimal

you can see it says defender under the wrap on the bonnet

I've given up waiting, not impressed with what's been done so far to such an Icon

so although Ive still got my series 3 Ive just bought a wrangler - at least I feel Jeep have stayed truer to the wrangler ideology

I had the opportunity a number of years ago to test drive a Wrangler off road in a disused quarry. I have to say it was quite impressive.

The styling of the Jimny, G Wagon, Wrangler and proposed Bronco all shout Off Roader whereas the new Defender says typical SUV. It would be nice to see a clay model of the Grenadier. Defender 90XS SW

For me, the appeal of the original Land Rover, series to the last Defender was that it didn't "shout" anything, (unless you wanted it to with modifications) it was a functional/honest, not bling/pretty or fashionable (until late in it's existence). Neither did it have to conform too much with legislation as the years rolled by thankfully.

The new vehicle will be great in its own right I am sure but not really a replacement, but it may be right for the some of the hipster's who bought them when they oddly became fashionable and sold them soon after... Or someone who would want a Discovery in square form.

Basically enjoy what you already have, faults/imperfections and all 🙂

How could that be the REAL new Defender,...the front of it is far too low, ...first time off road it'd be smashed to pieces?
Pickles.
