Mine makes this type of sound too - definitely seems to come from the rear somewhere - but I'm not labouring the engine when I hear the noise. On mine, it's noticeable in 4th at 60km/h but doesn't occur at 50km/h in 4th nor at 70 in 5th (or any other speed/gear really). Although I do notice it crawling along in 2nd.
Because of the driving situations/conditions which induce this noise - I don't think it's the rear diff. I suspect there is some component which is loose and perhaps vibrating at certain revs/speeds. The heat shield between the muffler and fuel tanks was slightly loose and was just touching the chassis rail. I tightened it up as best I could - it's almost impossible to get a screwdriver onto the screws given it's position, and bent it slightly away from the chassis rail. I haven't had a chance to drive it yet and see if this solves the problem but I hope so as it's driving me nuts. LR dealer reckons they can't hear any abnormal noise.  |

I had a drivetrain specialist(not LR) lift the vehicle off it's wheels on a lift then lie under the vehicle and listen while I drove in the same way that would duplicate the noise, the noise came from the splines on the propshaft.
It is the most effective way to find a noise like this but make sure that safety precautions are taken or it is done buy a person with the correct equipment and expertese to do something like this. |

Can you elaborate? When you say the splines, they are just grooves cut in the shaft, was it that the shaft had play in it or something? Thanks in advance |

The splines on the Puma are different to that of the Td5 in that it has a type of a 'bearing', removing the prop shaft and extending it fully reveals the 'bearing'. I suspect that the bearing is the culprit, there is no noticable play on the splines. Swopping my prop shaft with that of a Td5 elliminates the GRRR and reduces the amount of backlash I exeperience slightly, fitting my propshaft to LRs demo vehicle duplicates the GRRR. I have not cured the GRRR because LR have not been very helpfull in offering me a solution, the vehcile is still under warantee, I wait for thier promised call. It has been doing it since new. Hope this gives you some clarity. |

Hi lads,
my first post here... I have been reading the forum with great interest. I actually also have noticed a grr grr noise from the back when driving slowly in a high gear. Yesterday I went to the local dealer here in Norway and told them about it, when I collected the car in the afternoon they told me that the fastening bolts for the back axle had come loose! Now everything is tightened up and not a hint of any grr grr sound anymore! I also used to hear a slight CLONK sound when picking up drive or changing gear, and these were off course also cured by tightening the bolts. Check the rear diff both our 110's destroyed the rear diffs within 50 miles from new. My Utility being an early car actually came with a TD5 prop. Its chewed several UJs so far the TD5 UJs are smaller than the Puma. The UJs were replaced under warranty. The prop bolts where the prop bolts to the park brake drum come loose every 2000 - 3000 miles.
