It's Moab. The dirt there is like a fine powder. It's very strange how it sticks to some things, but not others. If it comes in contact with anything wet, it's instantly caked on.

Thanks ~ they are a rare breed in this neck of the woods, and I'm banned from the local main dealers 😜

This Facebook post puts those air bellows photos in context:

"@jonnylieberman took these pix and said,

"Bad news: the new Land Rover Defender most assuredly does NOT have a solid rear axle.

Good news: we caught FOUR Defenders on the very most difficult part of Poison Spider Trail here in Moab.

If these things can traverse Poison Spider, they don’t need ‘em!""

WOW. if they were out on Poison Spider Mesa, and cleared it all, that's really impressive. That should silence a lot of nay-sayers out there.

If JLR Were smart, they would post some videos of that to prove the capabilities to people. it's a Landrover thing...

Think those modern LR enthusiasts know how capable their FFRR, RRS & D5's are but also that they are limited by pretty long wheelbases and low hanging plastic bits which tend to stop people before the car does. Well with the same hardware but with much more aggressive body geometry and larger tyres be in no doubt that it will be more than capable where it matters. Instagram: l90andy

Whilst I agree with what you are saying the big issue with the Defender mules is that they are using 20 inch wheels and low-ish profile tyres due to the larger disc brakes. Who sells a 20 inch mud terrain tyre?.

They are available in the US but the overall diameter looks too big for the New Defender's wheel arches, especially as I assume the vehicle could drop to access height.

The current 20inch tyres Land Rover use are road biased and have next to no side wall strength, defiantly no good for driving along byway ruts or the flint roads across Salisbury Plain. These tyres cant even be aired down for fear of damaging the alloy wheels.

I would rather have a tyre that grips the terrain rather that rely on having to use the accelerator to spin the wheels to then engage the traction control, busted cv anyone.

Ive said it before, for LR to sell this vehicle in the US and Australia it needs to be supplied with a 33 inch tyre but expandable to a 35, Jeep Rubicon / new Ford Bronco. Otherwise it will just be another mall cruiser. It does not help that there is no rear live axle. For the US live axles mean business, independat suspension means more linkages to go wrong.

Hi Markb110. To clarify me saying larger tyres, I meant larger outer diameter, so despite seeing them running 20" wheels, there will still be sufficient sidewall. Also there will be choice, not just 20" - look at the existing size ranges on the cars I mentioned for a clue.
Mick, quite agree but JLR actively left that market behind when they were part of Ford's Premier Automotive Group. Same with Utility companies and military. For better or worse... Instagram: l90andy

The long wheel base in the video is a Range Rover sport isn’t it? (Serious question!)

Only in upper body form. The dirty bits are all Defender. The RRS things are actually the mules in the purest sense of the word, the boxy Defender prototype is the whole thing with some disguise panels bolted on. Instagram: l90andy
