I’ve had both remotes in the truck at times, also for longer trips. Never a problem and mine is also a 2009 model produced in August 2008, so must be the same ECU as the OP’s.

I regularly have 2 sets of keys out with me, which are used alternately with other set in close proximity.
Other than the steering lock protector making the steering lock stick occasionally, no issues with starting it.

I do commonly need to set and de-activate the alarm if I have left the vehicle open for half an hour without arming it, but apparently this is normal.

OK it started today, but has a funny dead spot after turning the key, the temperature gauge starts to shoot up to full, then the engine fires and kicks into life.....Also seeing 3 Injector restricted messages in the nanocom, are they just random, not seen them ever before.

Temperature gauge up to full is what happens when the CAN bus from the ECU to the instrument pack drops out. Can be caused by either a connection issue or the ECU is failing to send the messages out on the bus as it should Confused

Is it cranking OK speed-wise when it does this and "catching" at the normal time or not?

Is your battery charged up and are the terminals tight?

The fault codes you listed on Sunday are likely related to having the dash disconnected but may also be a sign that the fault with the connector inside the instrument pack is getting worse.

Every time you get this no start is it cranking 4 times then stopping?

Hi Martin

Battery is new last year and terminals clean and tight

The original non starting was always 4 cranks then kill, no fire.......but now like I say its taken on a new pattern of turns 2-3 times, temperature gauge tries to rise to full, turnover sort of dies then it all kicks into life after a definite hesitation, its not the same as the 4 turns then kill issue, I am just baffled.

I am going to try and take it to a local place called G and D Vehicle services tomorrow, spoke to them on the phone this afternoon and they seems to know their stuff, they are ex landrover guys.

Any clues most welcome.....

OOI how much is a new ECU ? I can get the green 10AS repaired, but if its neither of those, I don't want to replace unnecessary parts.....

OK the latest.....

Starts fine today, drove to the garage, he stuck his LR diags device on it, and the only fault showing was the immobiliser error because of the IPC bypass.

No other issues reported and starts fine.......

I dispair

He has swapped the starter motor relay over for another one just in case, but we both didn't think it is that

Hello around ayear ago I had issues with mine, It would start fine, however


It would when your driving along just shut down everything, no engine, dials all zero and no power steering. I have a code reader plugged in all the time.


No faults logged,


It would go 2 months and do nothing then on one trio would do this twice.....


Looked around on forums (and transit forums) people changing all sorts of parts....



I spoke to a house electrician friend and as no codes, the fault isn't getting to the ECU.


1) Swapped the starter relay and no change

2) Swapped the ignition barrel and wow, fixed


I'm not saying it's that but maybe worth a look if on mine the contacts were worn and just for a split second it decides to give up everything went dead. Like you not great at 65 / 70 mph in the middle lane of a motorway family on board and you lose power passing an artic Sad

Now that is REALLY interesting.......

I had the ignition barrel changed about 2 years ago, and the fault first appeared not long after that.....

Why would a 'new' ignition barrel be the cause

My symptoms are not like yours though, its purely a starting issue, it will never fail once started......

Cheap fix to try another,


I was so happy when it fixed my issue. It was becoming a pain randomly cutting out.


Even look at the wiring make sure its all plugged in correctly and tight,

So its a non starter again this morning after I removed the steering plastic surrounds to get at the ignition assembly, but after the first initial 4 turns then kill, subsequent attempts would not even turn the engine, I have had that before, but not as many times as this morning, any pointers there at all ?

I am going to remove the 10AS this afternoon and send it to Paul for repair/replace

Does the coil around the ignition ever fail ? Is it just a coil or are there other components in it?

can that coil proximity thing be disabled by a nano com at all?

Nanocom can be used to turn off the passive immobiliser. Generally doing so will greatly improve the reliability of starting, and this is certainly an essential step in diagnosing random failure-to-start faults.

On my Defender, if I operate the driver's side window whilst waiting for the glowplug light to go out the the engine will not start. If I turn off PI and do the same thing, it starts every time.

Disabling the PI will stop the dialogue between the keyfob and the column coil, but does not stop the immobiliser from being engaged when the vehicle is locked or unlocked with the plip buttons. Consequently when you lock the car it is still immobilised.
