Yes, both props were balanced to eliminate them as the source.
Thanks Steve, all that you mention was also done. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

After 3 months of systematic investigation by Elrico (one of the best indies in Cape Town), a new rear propshaft + new flanges has solved about 90% of the issue.
During this time, all the major drivetrain components have been swapped out and/or replaced with no difference: front diff, front propshaft, engine mountings, transfer box, rear propshaft, rear diff, A-frame ball joint, etc. Even though the original rear prop was showing true on the balancing machine (two separate ones showed it to be perfect), replacing it cured the vibration. The Puma now drives without any vibration, but there is a loud/low-frequency droning noise from about 40kmh up to around 110kmh, especially when you come off the accelerator. However, unlike the original vibration, it doesn't feel as if something is going to break while driving, so that's a definite improvement. What is still baffling to anyone who has worked on my Puma is that as soon as the rear propshaft is removed, the vehicle runs beautifully - no noise or vibration whatsoever. Yet, replacing the rear diff, halfshafts, etc., has no effect on the noise/vibration. Any further suggestions on how to resolve this droning noise would be much appreciated -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

I had similar problem after change of both diffs to Ashcroft lockers and used KAM 1:3,8 gears on Discovery 2. I was not able to set the right contact pattern on rear diff, I spent quite a long time testing different sets of spacers. Result was howling rear gears. When driving without rear prop shaft, it was quiet. I had to buy new rear gears, setup was just few minutes and result is perfect - no more howling. Thanks MadTom
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by new rear gears - do you mean the gears inside the rear diff? But aren't those the Ashcroft ATB ones? -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

No, no connection to Ashcroft ATB, but to the diff and howling. I was installing full lockers from Ashcroft together with slower diff gearing - those 2 big toothed gears. And the howling was problem of these two main gears (ring gear and pinion gear), no inside the locker (or ATB or any other diff centre).
The problem was, that with used gear set, I was not able to set their correct position - they were worn bad, and result was howling. With new gear set, setting the correct position was a piece of cake and result was no noise. Ah, I understand.
But in my case, we replaced the rear diff twice, with two different ones from vehicles running smoothly, and still the noise persists. When we put my diff in another vehicle, there is no noise -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Finally got the landy back after it spent 7 months in the shop.
Besides a thorough investigation into the root cause of the vibrations, the following were replaced: - rear propshaft - A-frame ball joint - rear springs (Terrafirma Heavy) - all bushes The landy now drives much better, although there's still a vibration at low speeds coming from the gearbox/transfer case area (bum area) and the rear diff howls at around 80kmh. Having been without an off-roadworthy landy since Feb 2018, I'm done trying to sort this out any further. I guess this is a Defender after all, so I shouldn't complain that it isn't safe, comfortable, etc., and just live with the issues. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Happy to report that after 3 weeks of much-needed TLC at a new indie workshop, the vibration is now almost gone and the truck now drives lekker!
they did a complete respray of the chassis, fixed the rear diff vibration, new UJs on both props, new output shaft seal, tightened front left bearing, new rear side shafts & drive members, etc. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

I was planning to drive to ASHCROFT from where I live in France to have ATB differentials fitted front and rear.
With the quarantine on both sides of the channel thats impossible for me to do now. If I were to mail order the ATB differentials What level of competence is needed to fit them Can I do it myself ? do I need to find a mechanic ? does the mechanic have to be expert in differentials ? |

You could DIY if you were a diff expert, so best to take it to a very experienced landy rover mechanic --

Were you planning on buying just the diffs and building them into your existing pinion housings, or buying built up units and just swapping the assemblies?
Either is fairly straightforward but the former is not for the faint-hearted and requires some special tools, the latter is an easy DIY job. |

Easy DIY job meaning me and my mate and the workshop manual ?
How many people does it take to lift a differential. I was thinking about the delivery. Last edited by CharlieDonuts on 23rd May 2020 2:50pm. Edited 1 time in total |
