That's the information needed...i'd say that pete's wheel is The Classic range which is 101PCD...From the photo...but measure twice order once... SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

As a general rule the bolt patterns will give away the boss type as follows:
One bolt top dead centre of mounting will invabiably be 70 PCD MOMO, OMP, Sparco, Mountney M Series etc Two bolts off centred at top on a small PCD of 74 Nardi, Personal, Raid and a few others Two bolts at top on larger PCD of 101 Mountney Classic 9 bolt pattern looks to be Moto Lita only. There are companies that make a conversion ring to fit a 70 PCD wheel to a 74PCD boss and vice versa. Oh no I've turned into a steering wheel geek. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper. Going back to an old post, but I was just about to start ordering a 48 spline boss for my 2007 Puma 90 Van based on that table, but thought I'd just check and found I've got 36 splines! Maybe I've had a new steering column...it was involved in a front ender before my time. Worth checking each time, especially as it's a 2 minute job I guess! Click image to enlarge |

That chart is an old one without the 2015/16MY update.
Original table at http://www.web-rover.co.uk/articles-steeringwheels.html It "should" have a 48 spline column, but you've done the right thing by checking What style is the wheel? 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Hi Martin, thanks. It's a standard LR wheel which is now well worn and smooth/slippy. Looking to replace with something with a better feel and slightly smaller size. Reading the posts, I'll go for near original 15" but security has me bothered and I'm currently on Optimill's website looking at the quick release bosses - not cheap but probably more secure than my Stoplock Pro.

Is it the type with the foam pad in the centre or where you remove the badge to get to the nut? 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

It's got the foam pad but there's no removable badge - the whole pad pulls off to expose the nut if that makes sense?

Sounds like the column has been changed in the past for some reason (perhaps to fit that wheel). 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Changed due to the accident I would think. That said, it looks like a standard wheel just like this:

It's a Station Wagon wheel though, so very unusual to be fitted on a hardtop between 1998 and 2014 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Aha! Thanks again Martin. Very helpful. I've learned something else about my truck today! Thank god I checked before ordering the boss. I had no idea that was a station wagon wheel.

Me again! I am now the proud owner of a Optimill quick release boss and swivel lock (very very nice pieces of engineering). It would be really nice to fit them onto my truck if only the old steering wheel would come off. I've manufactured a puller, doused penetrating oil on the splines but the wheel will not come off. I left the puller on tension over night and still no movement. I've torqued it to the point the 5mm bolts are bending over. I haven't seen anything posted about anyone having this much grief. Any ideas short of removing the column?! Thanks.
UPDATE: Spoke to Tony Cable at TJC Landrover, he advised to use a mallet on back of steering wheel (left and right) whilst keeping tension on with the puller. I'd used both methods separately but not together. After about 10 mins of walloping the wheel came off - thanks Tony! Very chuffed with all the stuff Optimill supplied - so nice to be rid of that awful LR wheel. Click image to enlarge |
