Internally at JLL they are nervous about the new Defender as starting price for basic model is £40k without any of the extras included in the disco or RR’s. They are not sure they will meet the sales quota. It retains a lot of the features hoped for (round headlights, near flat windscreen, ground clearance etc). There are also concerns that like the G Wagon it will end up being pimped up and get the wrong reputation.

Would that be any surprise at all? Given the tasteless Sh!t that's happened to Range Rovers and Defenders in recent years, it's a certainty. This week's photos from the Geneva show are proof that even an out of production classic is not immune form such treatment. |

I think if a vehicle is being pimped up, this is a good sign this vehicle has achieved something. I mean you wouldn't pimp a Dacia Duster, but a G Wagen, Wrangler or a ... Defender. I wonder if the new Defender will ever reach this level. Just look at these overpriced Defenders for above 200k£. Crazy! Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

Plenty of overpriced tat for the current model to satisfy the deep wallet and shallow taste bolt-on brigade, so I'm not sure that is new. The problem will be that if the starting price really is £40k, meaning it'll go up to Range Rover money at the top, the BOB may be the only ones that will buy it. Jeep, Merc and Suzuki have all really managed to do the job of updating a distinctive vehicle very well. My concern (forgetting all the renderings, though the latest one with the sawtooth style wheels is looking convincing) is that I simply cannot mentally fit anything that I think I will want to buy, or anything that will be much good, into the camouflaged shapes that we see in the press. It has to conform to pedestrian safety standards so it cant have big fook off steel bumpers. 130's have feeling's as well you know |

I have done, and so far no regrets What's not to like? 8 speed auto, front & rear lockers, old school solid axles, quick remove hard top and front passenger targa top panels, folding screen, removable doors, hose out interior, 200HP diesel, integrated roll cage, more comfortable driving position, doesn't leak, decent stereo, heater that isn't all or nothing, wipers that work smoothly without clunking with each change of direction, no transmission slop, etc, etc. 5 year warranty. And can be picked up used, with very low mileage, for around the same money as is being suggested for the entry level spec new Defender (£40k). Sure, it won't tow as much as a Defender but that's not critical for me. Although the Wrangler JL Forum in the USA doesn't make for good reading as far as reliability is concerned. Still, after many years of LR ownership I'm used to things failing on a fairly regular basis !! As/when/if prices return to more sensible levels, I'll look around for a nice series Land Rover project to tinker with. |

I've got a jeep renegade that i like, as well as a series 3 88 and a disco 4
the problem with wranglers are that they aren't classified as commercial for VAT and tax purposes, whereas the new defender will be unless they bring the new jeep gladiator pick up over here https://www.facebook.com/motortrend/videos...zODY4MDI5/ |

I'm pretty sure if you hit the front of one of those Jeeps or a G-Wagen you'll be relatively dead, so there must be some way around it!
