Oil leak help
I've got a leak in the engine and would appreciate help understanding it a bit better. It's by the front cylinder on the near side.

I had the engine steamed clean as unsure of where it was leaking. Drove a couple of hours and oil appears to be leaking where I'm pointing and getting oil on top of the black plastic air intake manifold.

It seems to be above the cylinder head gasket so I'm wondering if its the camshaft carrier to cylinder head?? I've not worked on an engine with this style of head they only have a cylinder head gasket and rocker box gasket....

I'm assuming you have to remove the camshaft, valve springs etc so have to take the head off anyway??? It's looking like a chunky job.

Is this a common oil leak and if left will it cause additional problems.

Ideally, I need to do a 2 hour, either way, trip before taking it off the road. I think it's been like it for a while so as long as engine oil topped up ok? It's not bad enough to have oil dripping down off the engine.

Isn’t that just below the oil filler cap? Have you filled her up recently and missed the hole?

It is below the filler but unfortunately not just miss filled. Had the engine steam cleaned to see what was happening. From what I've read the camshaft carrier does not have a gasket, just sealant. I'm wondering if this has sprung a leak??

Thanks but I don't think it is as higher up the engine. I checked around the pump and all dry.

So I decided not to fix it as it was going to be expensive as you've got to take so much out to get to it. About a grand in the end. It's not enough oil dip down in my case. I simply spray a can of degreaser over that side of the engine and wash off with the hose once every 3 or 4 months and pre-MOT.

If you do decide to get it fixed please keep me posted as I'd eventually like to do it.

Do you know what causes the oil leak? such as what seal/gasket or whatever?
