If it sounds a bit like somebody cracking their knuckles and is worse when you have steering lock on, then I'd suspect CVs. A really bad UJ will start to bind up (just before it goes bang and the propshaft tries to tunnel its way through the floor) so may be worth chocking the wheels, letting the handbrake off and getting under to give those a shake (no point doing it with the handbrake on as any load on the rear propshaft will take up slack). ---

As above check your UJs. Although also check your tire tread for a stone.
