About four or five transfer boxes, oil leaks, noises and told at one point was gearbox, let them fit gearbox. Gearbox was such poor quality that their fitting station couldn’t even reverse it off the ramp. Next gearbox turned up and input shaft was sticking out at some wacky angle and was told spigot bush would hold it central. Yeah. I think not. At one point a bearing was given to me, and I was told they didn’t understand why it was burnt black.
The vehicle was test driven by them and strange noise was heard. I was told to “just put some miles on it and see how it goes” so I said give me an extended warranty on it. This was refused, so I said new box wanted. That’s the quick version. But I’m sure it will now turn into a handbag fight. |

couple more questions if you can.
What do you think a td5 transfer box from Synchro is worth. it's their uprated one with sleeved casing and ATB. it's done about 10k miles. Also what do you think a standard td5 transfer box with circa 60k miles on it is worth. cheers |

Caterham, what ATB do Syncro use in their LT230 builds? I couldn't find anything on their site...

I believe they use the Ashcroft one.

I think that Ashcroft is the sole supplier of centre ATBs for the LT230.

So you are happy with the transfer box, and it’s operation, but you wish to swap to a Tdci transfer box as it will have a drain plug and washer not a 1/2 tapered plug.
Is that correct? What gearing is in the Td5 transfer box you have? Andy. |

As per Caterhams question....
What is a 12 month old 10k mile td5 transfer box worth that has the sleeve and ATB? For the interests of honesty, I’m trying to agree a price with him to buy it but could do with a steer on value, ie a price fair to both of us. Also I have a 65k mile Defender td5 1.4 transfer box that is perfect working order that I would sell if I bought Caterhams. I just wondered what that was worth so I can offset buying costs etc. Best regards Jez |

I would suggest in the region of £650 for a sleeved ATB LT230 and about £250 for a standard 1.4 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

For perspective the equivalent box from Ashcroft transmissions as an outright sale is around £1350 new.
I have no real idea by how much one year depreciates this, but £650 sounds a bit on the cheap side. I guess ultimately its value depends on how badly a buyer wants it, and how badly Caterham wants to be rid of it. |

thanks for the responses. I've been hit with man flu and this very much fell off the radar.
as said thank you for the valued comments / responses. I'm guessing no surprises but I do have a habbit of thinking I'm right (all the time) so good to get some comments in before I suggested what I thought. |

actually thinking about it if a transfer box is worth £200 on a part exchange basis (ie it could be shagged) would a decent one not be worth a little more than £250?
a guess a little scour of ebay will through up some values |
