Good morning,
How difficult is it to replace the turbocharger yourself? I have a Defender 110 Puma 2.4 from 2008. The car still has the original turbocharger without a remap. What I thought: 1 - change oil 2 - remove the turbocharger 3 - clean contact surfaces 4 - put run-in oil in turbocharger. 5 - replace the turbocharger with a new gasket set. 6 - start car and run stationary for 15 minutes 7 - Make test driving with not to much rpm. 8 - job is done I hope to have all the right steps in my changing plan? I hope for your reaction. Thank you Mario |

Hi Andy,
Thank you for your reaction What do you mean with "Also the dipstick and it’s tube need to be removed" What is the relation to the replacement? Is it because of the change of oil? or is it in the way of the replacement? Mario |

It’s in the way, possibly threaded through it. It’s just a case of removing one bolt, and twisting it up and out they way, getting it back in is a bit like the games you get in a Xmas cracker where for a while it appears impossible, but then lines up, and drops in. Sounds worse than it is. I haven’t done one for a few years, but got very quick at it when I had a Tdci.

I’ve had the joy of changing mine twice and yes it is a bit fiddly. The dipstick wasn’t an issue for me but the oil return pipe is a sod to get the bolts back in. I used a a super long extension bar from underneath.
There’s a bracket for the exhaust near the bottom of the engine which needs to be undone and you can pull the downpipe back far enough then without having to take it off completely. Some turbo manufacturers insist you change the oil feed pipe for the warranty. That’s nearly 100quid for one and a lot of dismantling to change. I can thoroughly recommend the Nakatatenga turbo gasket. I’ve had two genuine ones blow and these are solid. Well worth the money. When I changed mine I changed the oil, then again after another 500 miles. No problems since (touch wood) Dave |

i 'helped' my mechanic swap mine a few months ago.
Very long extension bars to get the nuts off the turbo and to get to the engine end of the oil feed pipe (which needs replacing with new ideally) the serpentine belt needs to come off followed by the alternator off and out from underneath. Im glad i didn't try and do it myself on the driveway. |

Yes maybe it was the oil rtn pipe. I didn’t remove the alt or its drive belt any time I’ve done mine though.

Hi Dave, Only out of curiosity, Why did you change your turbocharger twice? Do i understand you well, that you changed oil after 500 miles after changing the turbocharger? Regard from a sunny Amsterdam Mario |

Standard turbo, and it warped, sorted that, then it snapped due to being thin metal, and poor quality. Removed the bloody thing about three or four times. In the end I got shot of the Tdci and went back to a good old Td5. When casting is weaker than some studs it gives you an idea of the construction.

No had had one fitted by dealer under warranty at 16,000 miles due to mass airflow faults. This one went at 73,000 miles.Had BAS updrade at 60,000 miles and perhaps needed intercooler too at same time.Origional intercooler went at 82,000 miles so had BAS upgrade one fitted So perhaps we will never know.Had recon turbo exchange from turbo technics as it was only one avaiable at time but seem ok
