MT82 common failures
Hi,

as we do more and more of these 6 speed gearboxes we getting to see repeat failures which helps us build a picture of what to watch out for when inspecting, what parts to stock and also lets us help diagnose issues more accurately for the customer,

apart from the well documented output shaft failure we see many issues around the front end of the box,

starting at the front and working back, a common one is the spigot bush failing and chewing up the end of the pinion :

towards the rear of the pinion you have the gear teeth which mate with large gear thats pressed (no spline, plain bore interference fit) on the front of the layshaft, both of these can wear through on the gear teeth, especially when run low on oil as these are in constant mesh taking load in all but 5th,

The pinion is supported with a quite large NSK ball roller bearing, these also fail, one I split earlier !

the inside of the outer wasn't too bad but the balls and the outside of the inner are awful, this must of been noisy !!

notice how one side of the inner is not too bad but the other side is very bad, I suspect this is due to the end thrust that the helical gears create, we also see this on the LT85 that has ball bearings, a decent taper roller bearing would last better but would require more time and skill (cost) to assemble, I wonder if this is why the ball bearings were used.

The two 6th gears also wear out and due to the prices from landrover we have invested quite a lot in making our own.

We also have many in due to the selector rails jumping and jamming them in gear, usually 1st, a fix is on ours FAQ's,

Some come in with big holes in the right hand side, prop UJ's letting go,

thats most of the common ones, hope you found it interesting !!

As above, what was the mileage? The pitting on the bearing race is rediculous!

thanks Dave

you have built a couple of diffs for me with your ATB centres all good so far, and amazing difference on wet grass

cheeky I know but any chance of a forum discount on your modified gearbox to transfer box adaptor shafts?

I would like to buy one now just in case I need it in the future, a good discount would just be enough to prompt me to do just that (and would allow me to justify it to myself) DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Hi,

glad you found it interesting,

sorry I don't know the milage, we rarely get that info, the old unit just gets sent back for credit often through another party,

PM me for a output shaft kit price, Dave

I fitted an Ashcroft output kit. Nice piece of kit and 20k miles no problems and less clonking.

So the Puma is likely becoming as the worst ever Defender model. Just after Toyota of course. Puma 110" SW

^^^ A rather extreme conclusion, perhaps! In most respects the Puma is the best Defender of them all.

Ooo bearing spalling, lovely! Could have come out of a Super Puma chopper Rolling Eyes

Sounds like the MT82 is no better than what it replaced, the gearchange in mind is certainly way worse than the R380 in my 300Tdi so not a surprise that the rest is in the same category!

Interesting info, thanks Thumbs Up ---

Perhaps there's really not much difference between any of them. The MT82 in my Puma is a vastly nicer box to drive than the R380 in my Td5 Disco (possibly the least pleasant box I've owned in over 40 years). Both have done similar mileages (well over 200k miles) and the MT82 is still smooth and quiet but the R380 randomly sounds like a coffee grinder.

I guess there are good and bad examples of both, and we're all prone to judge from our own experiences. Personally I'd sooner have an MT82 than an R380 anyday.
