couple of months ago the lads who turned up had 4 toyota hilux with custom rear canopys
but i still see defenders around too |

That as may be, but i see a depot of Jap Pick up cherry pickers and no Defenders anymore as they sold the stock off.
I haven't seen any refurbed defenders returning unfortunately. |

Defenders are being kept for a ten year working life, irrespective of mileage. Then inspected for condition and kept on until no longer viable. There is no refurb scheme I'm aware of. I know of two Defenders at our local depo that have been taken off the road refurbished and are now back on site. A very good friend of mine who is hot glove (i think thats the term) Had a Defender then a Ranger when the Defender got to replacement age, hes now back in his old refurbed Defender and being a lot more productive than he was in the Ranger. The Ranger is now long gone. He said that the Ranger gould just not get to the places required which resulted in lots of walking. 130's have feeling's as well you know

Re the Disco 5 , I remember reading somewhere that Jerry Mcgovern found the Discovery 3 design to be very divisive , well I believe he has bettered this with the Disco 5 , seems to be universally disliked and for the investment must be considered to be a sales flop .
In our small market ,it is severely overpriced which is hindering sales as well , simply put, bang for the buck people that maybe interested walk out of the showroom with a Range Rover sport . Rear seat comfort and design in this price range is appalling ! Due to the ever increasing murricanisation of the world , pick up trucks is where it is at . Our Market of NZ has the Ranger as the biggest selling vehicle followed by the Hi Lux , Australia the other way round . These vehicles offer consumers great versatility although I tend to see them as compromise vehicles . They are not the best cars , not the best pick ups or not the best 4x4 , but they are selling . The new Defender must come in a very capable pick up option for it to be relevant globally . Improve on the old Defender that set the standard in towing terms for years and offer genuine utility . If this can not be achieved I am afraid it will be another insignificant Suv in a sea of Suvs , Much like the Discovery 5 !! |

I agree. The pick up is built upon the chassis of the Series ie ladder and springs. Simple and effective. |

If you really want to improve on towing then the obvious answer is go all electric - both the Rivian & Tesla offers have huge towing capacities far above current defender limits.

If RRS or D5 is your car for offroading, go for it. I just say, that these vehicles are no good for my jobs. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR
