After the seized wheel bearing last week, I finally persuaded Mrs Do$h to turn off the mindless crap pouring out of our local radio station and actually listen for mechanical noises today.
Wish I hadn't Heard what sounded like a wheel bearing drone from NSF but jacking the car showed no play in the bearing. Knocked the transfer box into neutral and rotated the wheel and got a momentary stiffness at the same point on every rotation of the propshaft (NOT the wheel). Got underneath to see if I could work out where it was coming from. UJs seem a little dry, but otherwise ok. I couldn't work out if the stiffness was in the UJs, the transfer box or the front diff as both the diff and the transfer box gave a slight clonk as the stiffness was overcome (just taking up the slack I suspect). To help get a clearer idea I dropped the NSF and jacked the OSF instead. Again, no play on the bearing but on this side I got no momentary stiffness in the propshaft. Both ends of the front propshaft checked - it feels like it's the rear end UJ on the front prop, but puzzled why it only did it when the OSF was up and didn't do it when the NSF was jacked. Really need to get the whole front end up to check. Will check the grease nipple on the UJs while I'm at it.
Will take it out in the field and try the lock - to - lock on anti-stall too 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits |

Mine's an 07 - should have three neeps per propshaft. Middle of the shaft and one at each end on the UJ

Have you got the greese nipples - they caused similar problems and would work loose - hence the change and the service action if people had problems = new prop shafts without nipples! Mike

I'll let you know my nipple count after I demolish this huge pile of home-cured bacon with fried goose egg, before I take a dump, then I need to finish rattling the papers while downing my third cuppa. THEN the day's work can begin. Getting up at 06:00 to feed the animals doesn't count as work in this house - it's food preparation
All good advice/suggestions so far folks, keep them coming 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits |

IMHO a non greasable propshaft should not be for a 4x4 vehichle which is intented to cross "wet" sections. I grease all UJ`s every 5000 km. Takes 5 min and GBP 5.
Sliding joints work better with MOS2 grease, UJ use normal greas. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

Like most trucks now the deletion of grease nipples is to cut down on servicing time and they are sealed for life, just they don't live as long now. My Puma got a new front propshaft as there was a service bulletin to replace any shafts that customers complained about... makes you wonder what kind of PDI they get if they don't notice the nipples missing. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Rear propshaft fine - centre grease nipple and both UJ nipples present and correct.
Front propshaft not good. - holes where the UJ nipples should be. Will post some pics later. Guess I'll be talking to the dealer on Monday about a new propshaft quoting SSM40851 Thanks folks 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits |
