Transmission/transferbox whine.
Hi guys looking for some advice if possible.

I have a defender TD5 54 plate and i have a transmission or transferbox whine seems to be getting louder but that could just be me making that part up. Its worst at 50/60 mph but does do it in all gears depending on the revs.

My hope is that it is the transferbox as i am currently looking to fit a discovery box or a overdrive unit.
My vehicle is mapped and has intercooler so I'm sure it would be able to handle the change of ratio.

What are peoples thoughts on the problem and recommendations for best options either different type of transfer box or overdrive unit. Which boxes would fit also.

Thanks

Jack

Some things to consider... When was the fluid last changed, is it the correct fluid and is it at the correct level? 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

Fluids changed not long ago and it did make it quieter for a short time but seems to be going back to how it was hence me thinking it was getting louder.

I put a D2 box in mine & it has made pulling away in 1st with a trailer on a bit of a struggle at times. If I were able to wind back the clock I'd probably get the 5th gear changed in the main gearbox instead.

This was my worry I didn’t want to change the lower gears and why I wanted to go down the overdrive route just very costly.
Is yours running standard power?

Oh and I have Global Roamerdrive installed. It is great and way better than the Disco T case I had in my 300 Tdi. All the benefits of a typical 1:4 case and 28% reduction in all gears when you want it. Highly recommend this modification. I really like it when off rodaing. Just leave it in low and pop it in overdrive when needed.

If its whining with new fluid it is possible you’ve got bearings needing attention. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

It was a romerdrive that I was looking at and like that it looks almost stock the fitting kit. I just really don’t like it’s price tag but you get what you pay for haha. What’s it like at motorway speeds?
Yeh would that be in main box or transfer box do you recon?
Is there anyway I can send a video to you?

Yes, standard map but it's not lack of power/torque, it's just a case that I need to use higher revs & slip the clutch otherwise it stalls.

I cruise for hours all day long on the highway at 110-130 kph (60-75mph). Its is very quiet and the Td5 is so smooth at lower RPMs. With the stereo on we can easily carry on conversations. It is such a pleasure to drive it in OD. I have a mild tune on the ECU and mostly just leave it in OD all the time. Global Roamerdrive is a Canadian company and I paid $1500 Cdn delivered for mine (that is like £700-800). Perhaps you can contact them directly in Vancouver and maybe they’ll ship to you? You guys get seriously hosed with UK pricing.

I run standard power with disco gears in my transfer box and have no problems. Makes the motorways quieter and a breeze. Also you don't have to change gear the moment you get going.

I did get a whine after changing my gears from the 1.4 to the 1.2 but since that I contacted Ashcroft and they said try tightening the intermediate shaft nut so I gave it all I could with an 18" breaker bar and it did get a little quieter to the point where it's now barely audiable. I doubt this is your problem but more likely to be a bearing issue.

Thats exactly what I'm looking for to be honest, its just better speaking with someone who actually has it rather than just hearsay. Your right about the uk pricing as everywhere in the uk is priced at £1500 so that is a good shout contacting them directly.

I think the best thing would be to remove the whole lot and get it reconditioned and fit romerdrive at the same time. basically gives you the choice of gearbox transfer box is what i like and also 2 low range boxes.

Thumbs Up

Sounds good do you tow with it, i have heard mixed reviews thats why I'm more inclined to go with the roamer.
Yeh i thought it was going to be more of an issue than first thought.

Thanks for the advice.

Yes I did I know the owner from long a time back. Though, I hear he is selling or has sold the company. Either way its still very much in business and it was a snap ordering from them. One phone call a couple emails and Paypal, then it showed up. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

No I never tow, however I do sometimes squeeze 7 people in to go to the pub for a laugh (as it's a 90) it still pulls fine. I know that's not comparable to towing but if yours is remapped I'm sure it'll cope fine. Remap is next for me once I've got my summer alps trip out the way. Just don't want to risk the reliability before I go.
