was there a recall on some clutches?
What was your symptoms to get LR to pay for it? |

Juddering pulling away, extra notchy gearchanges, rattling on idling. TBH it could be argued that a clutch is a consumable item so I consider myself fairly lucky that LR paid for it. Mine has a Used Approved Warranty too - not as comprehensive as the full LR 3 year one. They also sorted the handbrake and a dodgy vent blower. Overall, a happy customer. Was that LR's warranty or a third party? Mine's got less than 4months left and I'm going to have to decide what route to go down - don't fancy taking any chances after the many visits (and some outstanding issues) over the last two and a half years ! 1953 80

LR Approved Used warranty that came with it when we bought it.
I would't touch a third party warranty with an 80ft barge pole. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

I had mine replaced 2 weeks before the warranty run out after 'raising concern' over its noise and notchiness ... Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Is that all? I have just had a quote to supply and fit new clutch, renew front diff pinion oil seal, and replace gasket on "pto hole" on transfer box. Guess how much? Answer - just over £2,400 !! WTF??!! Take off £400 for VAT, £300 for parts, and it leaves £1700 for labour, which is about 20 hours of labour at current dealer rates. 20 hours to change a clutch !!!??? They gotta be joking!! |

I now know what has happened with this huge quote.
The price quoted includes fitting a *new* transfer box! This is the result of a communications breakdown between the customer (me) and the dealer; when the recall was carried out, one of the "advisories" the dealer gave me was that the transfer box was rather noisier than it should be. It is still quieter than many transfer boxes, so I am not bothered at this stage, and although I explained this to the service manager, somehow the cost of a replacement was included in estimate. A t-box is £1237.41 + VAT, so knocking this off the bill makes the clutch £769.69 + VAT, which is about what I was expecting. So at least the mystery has been resolved, and the dealer (with whom I have dealt for years and always been impressed) is 'cleared'. |

Just had my clutch changed again in my 07 puma 90, first one was changed in November 09 at 18,137 miles under warrenty.
just had another replacment at 33 ,121 miles developed the same symptoms as the first one ie clutch spring rattle, clanking noise depressing/raising the clutch etc. This time I had to argue with Landrover over liability as I am well outside the 3 year warrenty which ended April 2010 but they agreed to pay 50% so total bill for me was £334.00 it would have been £668.00 inc vat if they had not paid half. I will be paying them and collecting my defender from Matford Landrover in Exeter tomorrow hopefully all will be well with this new clutch and there will not be any other issues. The full price they quoted seems very resionable compaired to what other dealerships have quoted to other forum members and Matford have always been very good in the past for other issues (much smaller thankfully) |
