Some feedback, I have removed the timing case and the belt has failed, it looks like it was rubbing on the case cover. I changed the belt around 100 or so mile ago and the belt that I removed was in perfect condition. So I am assuming that it must be something I have done. Has anyone come across this before, I have a new belt and luckily enough there seems to be no permanent damage, going to get my mate (x taxi mechanic) to oversee the fitting of the replacement.

Looking at your crank pulley, is there not a modified one with a flange to help keep the belt from sliding forward. Comes as part of the belt kit from Britpart. Lucky your engine survived

I am not sure but think the modified pulley is for the 300tdi.
I believe that I must have set it up incorrectly. 1990 200tdi conversion 90 |

Looking at your photos there seems to be no tension in the belt between the tensioner & the fuel pump pulley & it looks like the belt is running over the casting for the bolt hole at the 5 o'clock position on the fuel pump pulley. My guess would be you have not set the tensioner up correctly.

Fitted the belt today, my mate did it ( he has done hundreds x taxi mechanic). Quick question the belt seems to overhang the FIP gear by about a millimetre and runs tight against the radiator side of the tension pulley. Should I be worried about this? Btw my pal is really happy with it and I trust him, but I am verging paranoid after it failed.

Looks about right to me... the flange on the other gear will keep the belt in "place" so to speak, so should be ok.

Bit of advice needed, all back together, Rev up and lots of white smoke then cuts out, tickover is fine but every now and then sounds like it misses a bit🤔
One thing noticed that the low pressure fuel supply to the lift pump will not seal ( due to shoddy new lift pump) would this factor in the fault. 1990 200tdi conversion 90 |
