From a cursory look under the bonnet of my TDV8 (read replacing EGR valves) and the engine bay of the Defender it looks workable.

No one's done it but I've spent a fair bit of time reading the workshop manuals for the engine and the various sensors used to run it and I think designing a bespoke ECU to control it shouldn't be too difficult. I wouldn't do the 'normal' which is bodge all the sensors to make the standard ECU work which other companies tend to do.

Source me a cheap TDV8 and I'm willing to give it a go... Whistle Ed

mmm there in lies a problem so far, the 3.6 TDv8 is much cheaper than the 4.4.

Found a New one for £10K

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RANGE-ROVER-4-4...:rk:3:pf:0

Then only yesterday I was behind a Vauxhall VXR with I think this engine in, it sounded great Smile

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vaxuhall-Opel-V...:rk:3:pf:0

Its £7500

Now I watch a few of those American car programs where they put this LS3 engine in almost anything, the other week a Porsche 911 !!

However realistically for my use I'm sure the TDv8 in a Defender would be superb. My dad used to get 35 mpg out of his old one and it sounded great. When you wanted to go it also had some beans Smile

I guess if the new engine is £10k then once you start having to do all the other work your into £15 / £20K mark. With Brakes and other mods? Too much Crying or Very sad

How about another option.... Buy a complete TDv8 they are less than £20K now and can the body of the defender fit on it. Again The american programs do this all the time with old American car bodies but underneath is a new car body.

Thumbs Up I would like this also, the looks of the Defender with the more modern bits under Smile ooh wait that's what the G class have pretty much done with the G wagon Smile kept the looks but everything else new.

This is relatively straightforward when both vehicles have a separate chassis but not with vehicles like the FFRR or RRS. Darren

Just sold my TDV8 for significantly less than that which was an entire vehicle running. But didn't need both vehicles and I'll always keep the 110 so why the L322 went. By cheap I mean really cheap. After all ideally need to move house to somewhere with a garage first! Whistle Ed

Thanks! I've just worked it out for you and it's not actually that bad. Mind you I did just do SW Surrey to Inverness and back on a tank and a half in my 300Tdi. Ed

Sorry for a bit of a thread revival but it makes for good reading this one!

I agree with the premise of not putting an LS3 in anything you care about fuel consumption for, that can be solved with some big side slung tanks (knew the 130 wheel base was meant for something Very Happy )

Biggest concern in my mind is the calibration robustness of the typical LS3 crate engines off the shelf. In my experience engines like this are only calibrated and made robust enough for your average kit car and therefore ECU strategies aren't tested to altitude or against poor fuel.

Anyone got any experience on how crate engine packages cope with thinner air at higher altitude and poorer fuel quality?

An LS often pops in to my mind when the 130's fully laden and crawling up a hill but I don't want to give up on dreams to take it to the Atlas mountains some day (you can get to 3000m on the Col del Sommeiler in France alone which is an excellent drive for those that haven't). Not worried about losing power at the tops of mountain passes only running incredibly rich and washing the bores/causing engine damage.
