MOT and emissions
just wondering.
got my MOT done yesterday (sailed through) but the tester seemed to make a point of how the emissions were really good - I'm sure he even said were almost none existent.

so ok at 100k miles the engine should have plenty of life in it but I wouldn't have been expecting such a comment on the emissions - perhaps he meant 'for the age' ?

got me thinking though;
- is this a good indication of the condition of the engine,
- does this suggest the remap is good,
- does not having a CAT make a difference (better of worse) - hypothetical of course

how disappointing.
just got back in and thought I'd have a look at the MOT cert to see what the emissions actually was but it's not on there Sad

how rubbish is that?

with it all being electronic these days are you able to log on and see results

As far as I know it's a smoke test only, which makes his comment a bit meaningless unless he's saying your lack of smoke is more noticeable than usual.

I would say the map is good, as maps can make diesels more smokey. one lad on the 306 forum I think have been busted with that, with the smoke test when getting a MOT. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I don't know but what I can say a probe up the exhaust was used and seem to think he had a reading rather than just a pass or fail ie smoke or no smoke?

A cat will not affect smoke. The only way at present on the diesel MOT to detect the presence or absence of the cat is visually. Whilst there are exhaust gas tests which can tell if the cat is present they are not part of the MOT test at the moment due (I understand) to the cost of the equipment.

This may change in the future.

I am not aware of the tester ever probing my exhaust (ooh, err!) during a test, but then again I don't pay much attention to what they are doing (it's too stressful).

so went back to the MOT centre and asked for a print out of the emissions for interest and for your info should you wish to make comparisons.
I'd certainly be interested to know how it compares to others (but only if yours is higher / worse Mr. Green )

0.37 PPM which I believe is circa 25% of the max permissible of 1.5 PPM (?)

actually this is whats on the cert.
Test limit 1.50 l/m
absorption coefficient 0.38 l/m 2570 l/min zero drift 0.01 l/m
absorption coefficient after correction 0.37 l/m

Yeah Cat on diesels do the square root of f**k all. it all goes on the smoke, which the cat doesn't even effect. Just watch how you remap Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
