I'd love to see the pictures of this to see if it is something I can attempt.

Click image to enlarge Mine arrived today from Taiwan 10 days after ordering. Is it a straight plug and play or is some calibration required? 2016 Defender Landmark 90 2005 Defender CSW TD5 90XS |

Thank you for the pics.
How does attaching a wire to the screw give the revs?? Or am I missing a point?? I think I was told before by someone that the revometer has to be wired into the ECU on the TD5 Defender......???? Its a pleasure I have just been reading your Defender story it is a great read.
I note you are a detectorist like myself and use a CTX and a 17 coil like i do. Recently purchased a pro 45 harness well worth buying if you dont have one. 2016 Defender Landmark 90 2005 Defender CSW TD5 90XS |

Attaching a wire to that screw on the back of the alternator is basically the same thing as using the W terminal on a 200/300tdi alternator - it's connected to one off the stator windings before the rectifier.
As far as calibration goes there's a calibration screw on the rear of the rev counter - the smallest of turns moves needle a lot. Ideally a nanocom on live data is best to calibrate it but both my td5s idle at 780 -800 rpm so setting your idle to that will get it as close as you really need |

Has anyone found a way to tint the back-light green?

Many thanks to Jontd5 for telling us about this tacho
Fitted mine a few days ago, and it works brilliantly, best £18 i've spent! I've no idea, how you manged to fit the alternator wire from below though - I quickly got fed up with crud falling into my eyes, and decided to take the alternator out from above I couldn't get the back off the tacho to colour the LEDs (didn't want to break it), so I've left as is for now '99 TD5 Defender 90 '52 Series 1 80" '99 Caterham 7 |

👍👍 good to hear it worked out for you. Yeah the alternator is a pain of a job, was a good hour underneath mine. The black ring around the glass will come off - widen it out from the back, the defender dash will hide any marks in the paint. The needle will pull off and dial will come out, gotta line up needle at zero when putting it back together

Why would it make any difference as to the number of cylinders? The W terminal is basically one of the poles from the alternator, that's going to spin at a fixed ratio of the crank (depending on pulley speed and number of poles in the alternator). If you have 4, 5, 8, 12, 16, 24 cylinders it doesn't matter because the crank still turns at the same speed. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |
