Defender TD5 Clock
I took the dash out for a number of reasons, firstly to replace the mount and the binicle for metal ones and to replace the bulbs for LED, since then the clock has failed to work. Not only that, the clock is a sealed unit and I would like a clock that has a bulb in it.
My question is, is there a replacement clock that will fit without altering the dash and be as bright as my new LED lights ?
The LED’s that I have fitted are “Ice Blue”.
Many thanks

I have looked for aftermarket clocks, But after trawling through ebay, I cant find any.. I guess I could try different search words....

And I had wondered whether to buy a oem spare, and try and take it apart (***) - fit a blue bulb and then replace the current clock if successful...

(***) - I have seen videos where a chap has pulled apart a sealed light, by heating it in the oven... I wonder whether heating the clock to soften any glue may help the situation? I also noted a inner clip either 'side' of the clock, I tried using 2 sets of tweezers to get this apart but really needed a 3rd & 4th hand to manouver the clock about...

Good luck in your search and keep me updated Cool Regards
Adam

oooh the other thing I thought of doing was replacing the clock with a revometer... next to the speedo, move the temp clocks along one.. As I have a clock on the radio... my phone... & my wrist watch, don't think I need one on the counter too. Each to their own though. Regards

I would also recommend replacement of the clock with a rev counter, it’s much more useful.

£18 though? I paid £260 for the LR one. Where is this £18 bargain?

I modified the TD5 clock with brighter LEDs and removed the orange tint from the needle backlight and it matches the other dials which have LEDs retrofitted.

I'd be interested to know how to open-up the clock. Paul.

Agreed... How did you get the clock open??

Also what model are we talking about??

I think the tdi is 'easier to get in to' - TD5, is 'impossible', and not sure about the tdci... Regards

Bezel on TD5 clock is plastic and pops off quite easily. The clear plastic will then come out easy. Hands pull off and allow the face to be removed. I cant remember if the 'movement' is held with clips or screws. The 4 LEDs an unusual 90deg surface mount type and are mounted to the PCB facing the centre spindle. I changed these for normal 3mm white LEDs which face the same way as the originals by bending the legs.

Before modification, LED conversion on other dials:

Crikey - I tried everything, twisting, squeezing, pulling, squashing.... I got loads of squeaks and grunts, but nothing shifted... well done you! Regards
