Good day to you all.
So this morning on my way to work I noticed I had a light out...  Click image to enlarge Both lights work on low beam, and as you can see the 'inner side light' works. with the lights on, If I flash the high beam it works. But when I put it on solid high beam both low beam and high beam stop working on the driver side light. On another note, with the lights off, when I flash the lights, it also doesn't work. Ill be pulling the light out this eve to look for any loose connections, and checking the fuses, and checking the stalk itself... But if you have any other info on where to start that would be gratefully received. As bluest says swop lights over, if problem persists on same side that eliminates headlight fault.
Does your vehicle have dim dip relay as that is know to cause various issues. A volt meter on the H4 connector and check voltage. LED headlights do not work below about 9 volts. Brendan |

Im not sure if mine does have a dim/dip relay... I don't recal fitting/changing one when I fitted the lights about 6 months ago.. Ill change the lights over and see where im at. Get a decent multimeter (which also has auto off power switch)
Check voltage at both H4 connectors You would not have touched the dim dip bits when changing the headlights. If you google Defender dim dip you will get information on it. Easiest way of disarming it is to swop the pink relay for a bypass relay from LR at about £30. Just watch some of the videos. Have come across the dim dip relays causing all sorts of effects including disco style lights. Brendan |

The RH and LH main beam lamps are wired via separate fuses, F24 & F25 (10A) respectively, prior to the fuses they are fed from a single common connection on the steering column switch, so it seems odd that they should work differently depending on how it's switched, regardless of the condition of the switch, (a common failure point, or the dim/dip relay,) you should see the same light either working or not.
The left and right dipped beams also each have a separate fuse, F22 & F23, and again are wired to a common point on the switch. I wonder if someone has modified the wiring in some way, maybe to add extra relays in like the Boomslang loom does. A bit more investigation is needed here I think  |

My 2004 has me foxed as well with the dip beam full / full beam operation. Dip beam works well but when I flick the stalk forward to full beam the dip beam turns off so the road directly in front isn't lit up. However when I pull the stalk back to flash full beam the dip beam stays on and i get excellent light coverage. Could be perfectly normal?

That sounds like my issue... So I checked the fuses with a Clarke cdm10c multimeter and they are fine, I then undone the steering column but couldnt seem to take it off so I put it back on all of a sudden my lights work..... Lol Going to my garage tomorrow to get a new light stalk anyway 😁 as that seems to be the issue... Sounds like a good plan Adam. Bluest thanks for confirming I just have normal light stalk. No wonder the previous owner bunged a couple of spots on the a-bar !

Since connecting Wipac spotlights to the main beam, without a relay (garage’s Idea, not mine) I’ve experienced the same issue. Did you solve your problems and, if so, how? |

This is entirely normal and in fact a legal requirement with H4 bulbs. You can have a maximum 55W dip beam and a 65W main, so if the dip beam didn't extinguish the resultant 120W would be illegal. The heat would also result in ridiculously short bulb life. |

To sort my issue, I fitted a new light/indicator stalk... mine turned out to be a dodgy connector... I also told lots of people I didn't recall fitting a relay - But I DID lol 
If I were you though, get yourself a relay and try that first? But then the question is - would that replace current relay or be side by side? On that note - would the garage look at it? free of charge as they fitted it without relay?? Thanks for the response for which I’ll try adding a relay but as it was fitted in the UK, and I’m in Spain, I’ll have to sort it myself. However, unless it’s the increase from 55W to 100W of the new spots I don’t understand why the relay is necessary or why the stalk connectors would suddenly let go - assuming that is the problem. |
