General advice sought
My wife has a Nissan Cube on which the steering lock failed in February 2017. As it is tied into the anti theft system it had to go to the main dealer to have it replaced and programmed into the immobiliser system etc etc. Cost was somewhere in the region of £700. Fast forward to last weekend when the car failed to start and was exhibiting the same symptoms as before. The RAC recovered the car back to the main dealer again, so I had to phone them Monday morning to explain why it was back with them. It is unlikely to be investigated this side of Christmas as they are so busy, but I’m fine with that. I explained to the lad that it looked like the same problem as before and that the car has only covered around 6000 miles with the new steering lock. He then delivered the stock company line of “One years parts and labour warranty on the fitted part.”

Basically I need to know what my options are if it turns out to be the same problem as before. I would honestly expect a steering lock to last the life of the car, and certainly more than 20 months or 6000 miles!

Has anyone got previous with such an expensive repair failing outside warranty, and what routes are open to me to recover some or all the cost of having steering lock number 3 fitted to a car that has only done around 30k miles in 8 years. Any and all opinions are welcome, oh and Merry Christmas to you all.

hi Roddy yes one years warranty is the norm however you can argue that its not fair ware and tear with so little use you most likely not get a lock fitted for free but a goodwill offer hopefully a chat with Nissan customer services may help

I think a bit of time brushing up on your consumer rights might be time well spent. Some googling and a call to your local citizens advise would be a good start, they have helped me before. From memory, it is whether goods/service are fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality. That is subjective and is viewed from the perspective of a mythical "reasonable person". I think, due to the time elapsed, you might struggle, unless you can find some precedent. If they refuse to help, you could got to the small claims court, but again, you would have to show that the goods were not up to scratch and you could lose. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
