Please tell me your joking when you say HD is nothing special
I had a D3 with Xenon and now have an Audi A5 with Xenon and both are fantastic, the standard halogen bulbs in the defender are absolute compared to Xenon No wonder they are known as Lucas Prince of Darkness |

Bulbs in my 90 are Xenon and the discovery and by the same principle the rear lights would be better.
As for HD we have had it for years and im not convinced now went for my class one medical asked if my eyes were HD compliant, just to check - seriously, they did seem to turn the quality down on other channels. Mike |

Have you the proper Xenon or the mickey mouse boy racer blue tinge bulbs? because the proper Xenon bulbs that operate at 10000 volts are far superior |

There should have been a after i take offence, none actually taken No I like some of the HID's didnt mean to suggest i didnt - but usually on the cars they are supposed to be fitted to Im not a fan on the defender - just doesnt seem right and certainly more parts to fail
Thats a good site - are the rear LED's better in your opinion? Mike |

Hi MSE & all,
Yes, the LED's are definately better in my opinion - much brighter. The white front sidelights are really bright and clear and the rears the same. One thing you notice is that the light is slightly 'focused' - it is more like a beam than the all-round glow you get from normal defender lights (because they don't have a reflector like most cars). This is one reason they look brighter - the light is going where you want it to! No prob with MOT with LED's Grockle if that is what you mean. HID's are another matter! (Please don't confuse HID lights with 'xenon' - HID's are gas-discharge lamps - Xenon is just the gas filling in a halogen bulb.) Cheers, Rick |

Agree about the spot brightness, but my personal opinion when I bought some LEDs was that the all-around visibility was more important... not so much of an issue with front sides, I wanted my rear lights to be just as bright from 70 degress as straight-on. I think LEDs are great - but more so in purpose-designed reflectors. I know some designs try to address this by clustering multiple LEDs around the sides of the 'bulb' stem, maybe some of these are better at this now. |

ADS90,
The LED's I use are a combination of 18 LED's facing out and 6 around the side - best of both worlds! The main reason I have for going for LED's though is the very low battery drain and the reliability. I am prepping my 110 for an extended overland trip and LED's mean one less pack of spares to carry. I have swopped every light for a LED (apart from stripping the dash apart!) and fitted HID's to the Headlights and Spots. Cheers, Rick. |
