Exhaust - blue smoke
Yesterday morning has a short occurrence of thick blue smoke from the exhaust. Here is the situation.
Early morning ambient temp here was -3°C. Truck had been parked for a few days under the carport.
When starting, I had the usual puff of a bit of blue smoke which normally is a matter of seconds only.
This time a bit different. I started driving about immediately from cold but without much rpm and without asking any real effort to speak of on the engine.
From our house it is merely 50 meter flat until there is a 100 meter long stretch of really steep downhill to the main road.
As usual I went downhill in first, no gas at all, but using the engine brake making sure engine does not go above 2000 rpm.
Here comes my surprise. I always thought when using engine brake, fuel supply is cut off. But the entire 100 meter downward stretch during engine braking I got pretty thick blue smoke all the way.
Carefully continued on the main road with minor engine load, and after 2/300 meter only, the blue smoke disappeared and turned normal white as normal when it is this cold.
We then did a normal highway and city trip, everything just normal. The entire time, including from the cold start, the engine turned round just normally, also no strange sounds.
Any idea what could have caused that short event of thick blue smoke?

Most of the time blue smoke is related to oil into the combustion chamber. Just google the subject and you will have lots of info whether to blame valve stem seals, worn rings-cylinder etc. Puma 110" SW

Thanks for the pointers. Just gave it another try from cold again. This time just a few seconds of blue-ish smoke (has always done that), and then it turned quickly back to white/colourless, also on the same steep downhill stretch as yesterday. Oil level also at the full mark, so not sure what to make of it. Yesterday the blue smoke was much thicker than today. Guess will just be attentive to it for now.

Question. Is a puff of blue tinted smoke for just a few seconds at startup normal? I thought it was, but on condition that it turns to transparant/whitish within 2 or 3 seconds. Right or wrong?

That points to valve stem seals. But I probably would not worry about it.
In warmer weather you could leave it for 1 hour after reaching normal operating temperature and start it again and see what happens. Puma 110" SW

Is it a TD5, as mines does this from cold especially on a downhill. Was told it was possibly to do with injector lash settings. It does smell like unburnt fuel. Like an injectior sticking when cold, used to see it at work quite often with Perkins and cummins engines.

It’s a 2008 Puma Td4, 2.4 liter. As today it didn’t do it again, can only hope it was a one-off, and maybe the sticking valve suggestion could well have been the culprit. Will surely monitor it closely.
Out of curiosity, do others with a Puma have a brief puff of blueish smoke at a cold start, just for a few seconds?
As said, mine has done that for as long as I can remember, so maybe that is just normal. Obviously the big blue smoke of yesterday as explained was not normal.
Contrary to many on here, my main dealer here in Geneva are very good. Will also ask them about it.

Obviously getting similar weather to you Eric. Only when cold I get a big belch of blue/grey, then after a few seconds it turns to white which stays until we hit the main road, approx 750m downhill so very little revs over that distance. All gone by the time I’m using normal revs. I can say it does smell a bit though.

This has been the same the last two winter seasons, albeit the belch of blue grey seems to have got a bit bigger. Shocked Monsieur Le Grenadier

I think you are worrying too much, probably just cold related or a glug of oily muck from the inlet tract / crankcase breather system. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

If I don't use the ashes to to prewarn my 2010 24 i get white smoke on initial startup only. No blue.

If it did it after a few days standing but doesn't do it after say 24hrs quite as bad it would suggest something leaking into combustion chamber over time there is a greater build up.

What's it like if left e days? If possible ? Cheers
