Actually think that roadster photoshop is quite funky ... reminds me of an old Bentley blower for some reason. -------------------------------

CTIS definitely wins my vote!

Tire Inflation

A new patent application from Jaguar Land Rover shows a central tire inflation system that could be destined for the new Defender. The patent application shows a very detailed system that interacts with various modules in the vehicle and adjusts tire pressures based on drive mode. The usual functions of a central tire inflation system are displayed, but JLR takes it a step further by integrating features such as a “Puncture Assist Mode.”

The features that are integrated into the drive modes appear to offer tire inflation for various environments and circumstances. The base or interim tire inflation pressure is set to 29 PSI and is adjusted based on the option selected. The example for the standard on road mode is set to 33 PSI in the front with 36 PSI in the rear. These pressures are very similar to what is listed on the placard for the current Land Rover Discovery, which is on the same platform that should underpin the Defender.

Going further into the various modes, we see that there is also a “High Load Mode” which pumps up the tires to over 40 PSI presumably to be able to take on extra weight. As expected, there are various examples of off-road modes which take the pressures down to a range between 20 and 26 PSI depending on the option that is selected. There is also a “Recovery Mode” which takes the pressures all the way down to 17 PSI which would likely be used to recover the vehicle out of sand or mud.

The integration of the system would allow it to work with the ABS and stability control modules so that the vehicle would be prevented from setting pressures out of range. In one example, the application states that the stability control module could communicate with the tire inflation module in order to prevent a situation where the vehicle would experience excessive oversteer or understeer.

LOL! Let’s not get ridiculous here. Rolling Eyes

My point is..the more gimmicks they put in these things (Ill admit, I personally love the gimmicks and have no wish to go backwards) makes them unsustainable over time and more and more disposable. They are making them harder for people to own long term keepers.
Personally, Ive just conceded to the fact that my family will continue to upgrade cars every 36 months or so and leasing will most likely be the norm for at least one of our vehicles. No horse-drawn carriages for this family, unless I’m renting out a 15 minute carriage ride in old-town....but the way car companies are in a frantic race to out gimmick each other as quickly as possible, I feel a bit bad for people who cant really swing a new car every 3 years...or even 5 years. Oh well. People will either keep buying up new cars or they’ll figure out ways to keep these “technological wonders” on the road with all systems functioning. Interesting times we live in. Thumbs Up

I bought my Puma in Feb 2010, brand new.

In the almost 9 years that I've had it, ALL of the issues have been mechanical: front axle bent from factory, rear diff, clutch (replaced 3 or 4 times), gearbox output shaft, clutch slave cylinder, etc.

So yeah, none of the tech has actually every gone wrong on any of my landys since 2008, always mechanical.

so bring on the tech I say Rolling with laughter --

I didn’t think there was any “tech” in a 2010 defender? Ray

well, it has an ECU, ABS/TC, various sensors, etc., all controlled by software - so yes, there is some tech.

the fact that you didn't think there was any tech kinda proves my point: tech is so ubiquitous now that you really don't have to think about it Wink --

I saw a SWB station wagon on test near Banbury a few days ago. Proportionally quite different to a 90, didn't look quite so much like a Discovery as I had thought. I noticed the top half tapers in quite steeply though, its a long way off vertical. Seemed longer than a previous 90 but still quite narrow. 2011 110 USW

Ya, the HVAC stopped working in the middle of our ski trip, making it a life threatening situation with ice on the inside of our vehicle. Only way to fix is reflash the computer.

I don´t for a moment believe that live axles and ladder frame chassis are relevant for the new Defender.
The old school mechanical components in those live axles (swivels, halfshafts, differential) wear out alarming quickly, if used for any serious off roading. Technology controlled independant axles do not fight each other in the manner that two live axles connected with a locked centre diff do.

However, whatever technology it uses, has to be thoroughly sorted and reliable, Drivetrain components need to be robust, well protected and easy to maintain.

Electronics need to grouped and isolated from one another, simplified and logically positioned to make it easy to identify and repair. Minor issues shouldn´t be capable of restricting the basic function of the vehicle. This is all common practice in competition vehicles, and only needs to be industrialised for production.

If they could just keep their hands off the gimmicks and gismos that few asked for and even fewer need, Land Rover would be well on the way to creating a vehicle that delivers what its history and appearance promises. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,
