Good day all.
So before I trouble my mechanic, let see if you lovely knowledgeable people can point me in the right direction. So on my way home from the NEC yesterday I noted a tapping sound. At the NEC I loaded up the truck, got the wife and in-laws seated & started up The Duchess, we started to poodle home, creeping out the car park, and roads, and as I was about to go on the roundabout before the motorway I gave it a bit of welly to get up to speed... It might have nothing to do with it. But im sure after that, it was then that the tapping noise started seemed to start, or at least got load enough for me to notice it over all the other noise.... And another note - The tapping seemed to change pitch and speed dependant on how hard I accelerated.. I was tired after an early start, long drive & long day shopping, and a long drive home, so it could all be in my head.. This morning the tapping was still there, but not as prominent... I will have a listen on the way home too, and add any changes or worthy notes.. Is it dependant on speed or by revs?
If it’s revs then its engine or exhaust related, if it’s speed related then it’s drivetrain related. Also just check that it’s not something actually in the cab, I kept hearing a squealing but it’s passenger seat / battery latch related, and a vibration from the rear was also something in the load space. yesterday it definitely sounded like it was in front of me, in the engine bay.. Thanks for the heads up with the speed or revs comment, that's helpful, and ill be listening out on the way home.. I have heard the tapping on other diesels before, and always wondered what makes that tapping noise... Well im about to find out lol Thanks again guys Regards Adam Loving The Duchess The Defender 110 TD5 XS My Defender story - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic64005.html |

Hi all,
On the way home the engine sounded much better, no tapping out of the ordinary.. I had the flaps open at times and all I could hear was general engine noise. I'll keep you updated as the week goes on. Regards Adam Loving The Duchess The Defender 110 TD5 XS My Defender story - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic64005.html |

On mine it is Small drumming her fingers on the dash, wanting to get home for her cup of tea faster

if the tapping is speed related, is it coming from the instrument panel area? If so it may just be your speedo cable needing some lubrication or pushing home firmly. A dab of grease on the instrument end may quieten it. if you have had the binnacle off lately the cable can get pulled away from the speedo. Jeff

Thanks for the info Jeffersj. this morning it was all quiet too.
The tapping was definitely coming from the engine bay, or so I believe... But as its gone all quiet, ill have to hold out until it comes back - which hopefully it wont.. Regards Adam Loving The Duchess The Defender 110 TD5 XS My Defender story - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic64005.html |

Check the heat shields around the gearbox and exhaust on the passenger side. They come loose or get bent and can cause an intermittent tapping noise that can seem to be speed related.

His profile shows it as a Td5.... they don't have a cable (well they do, but an electric cable instead of a rotary type) |
