2.4 Puma Intermittent starting problems
Hi Everyone,
Can I have some help please?

Vehicle
2007 2.4TDCi puma 90
40,000 miles
Well serviced etc

Problem Summary

The truck fails to start sometimes. I have searched the forum but cannot find the same symptoms as mine has.

Sometimes it starts first time, it turns over and then starts with no hesitation
Sometimes it starts to turn over then stops trying - as if suddenly no fuel or elec - it doesnt struggle turning over, it just stops turning over
Its intermittent.
Sometimes the engine will turn over for 4 or 5 seconds and then stop trying, sometimes it will turn over a seconds or so then stop. Typically once it starts to play up you can try lots of times and it will vary from turning over for a while before stopping or no turn over at all. Each time you turn the key back and try again its a different length of time turning over before it stops trying - so no consistent pattern
Then all of a sudden it will go back to normal and turn over until it starts. Once it starts if you turn it off and start it again, and again, it will start as normal.

Got in it this morning - first turn of key, didnt turn over at all, second attempt, it turned over a bit then nothing, several more trys and would not start. Turned off and left 30 seconds, tried again and it turned over and started almost straight away. Repeated several times and kept starting.

It seems to be getting progressively worse and is failing to start more often

No logic or reason I can find - does it sometimes from cold and sometimes when warm after running but parked for 5 mins

The lights remain lit up on dash when this happens
Have tried new battery with no improvement. Battery terminals are tight.

Any advice please?

I checked the relays. They certainly weren’t in as tight as some descriptions on here have suggested they should be and pulled off easily but didn’t seem like they were lose either.

I took them out and squeezed up the female connectors and slightly twisted the spades on the relays. The are definitely tighter now.

I will have to keep trying it and report back. It’s starting fine at the moment but that’s the problem with trying to solve an intermittent problem.

I will do some research on what earth connections to check and where they are ( any tips appreciated) and will have a go at that when I get some time in the daylight

Thanks for the help so far. I really appreciate it. Will update soon

Could be an intermittent starter issue, you do mention it seems to be getting worse.
Take the starter off and connect a boost pack to it, push some wood against the dog, if it doesn't push you off everything, this could be your issue.

Hi,

Thanks. I will get the starter out and check the earth connections as soon as I get some daylight time with it.

I dont know about fault codes. I will have to get someone with a reader to have a look for me.

I will report back. Thanks for the help and patience.

I wouldn’t mess with the connections as you may upset the intermittent side of it then you might never find it. It will make it harder to find for an electrician.

Hi, No scangauge connected.

Since tweaking up the connectors on the relays the only other thing i have done is changed the battery in the fob just in case that was weak.

I am trying to change / try one thing at a time otherwise I am not going to know what has worked

Took my kid out who is learning to drive in it yesterday and must have starte stopped with engine on and off about 20 times and no problem. Started again tonight straight away.

Not out of the woods yer though, its gone this many start ups before without playing up.

I will report back when I have more news.

It is entirely possible that tightening the relays under the seat has fixed the problem. It will take months for you to gain the confidence though.
