First thing is to check the relay - it’s the central red one in the fuse box by your knee. That’s most likely the culprit. While you are at it swap for a VW99 relay, about £10 on eBay and one of the best upgrades you can make!

Excellent WindyJ i'll start with that. Much easier that removing the dash!! if it isnt that i'll add the upgrade to the overall fix.
Thanks for the advice |

I was just wondering what makes this a good upgrade? I may do it myself and I’m always looking for ways to improve the defender |

It gives you variable speed intermittent wipers.

The VW99 relay gives you a variable intermittent wipe function. Darren

No, the function is entirely within the relay. Here you go, have a read of this:

No, you use the same stalk. You just program the relay each time you use it.
Turn on intermittent wipers They wipe Turn off wipers, until enough rain on screen Turn on intermittent wipers They will now wipe at the time of the period that you had them off for in the above process |

It’s completely intuitive to use too....you won’t be trying to remember how it works or anything and you also get variable control of the wash wipe i.e. the longer you press squirt the longer the wipers stay on and vise versa, also water before wiper movement which is much better.

It might be as "simple" as corrosion at the wiper arms. If you lift the rubber cover at the base of the wiper arms you can see the mechanism. You could well see rust at the shaft. Worth spraying a little WD40 onto the shaft, and wiggle the arms. This might free the mechanism. If it does, then after a few wipes you should properly lubricate with silicone spray lubricant. Don't forget to reseat the rubber seal.
Hope it is as simple as this. Otherwise a bigger job altogether. Plenty of threads on the site explain the bigger faults/repair. |

For both to stop working, I would think the issue is at the motor
I’ve just removed the dash on mine and you can see the motor on the left, the movable ‘chain’ sits within the silver tube that goes across the dash Click image to enlarge The mechanism in the motor would be similar to a train steam engine wheel with rod attached and as the motor turns, the chain is pushed and pulled along the tube. At 2 points the motor arms are attached to spindles which are attached to large perforated edged discs which catch the chain and thus cause the wipers to move back and forth. Click image to enlarge It sounds like the chain has disconnected from the motor mechanism. If it is this then it’s a partial dash removal if you can disconnect the chain from the motor... Click image to enlarge if not the whole lot needs to come out Welcome to owning a defender! |

Thanks for all the advice folks!
At least with this knowledge I can go in looking for what you have said and perhaps find the issue rather that thinking its one thing, getting there and its not. I would have been lost then. I think the new relay sounds like a great upgrade and will be doing that anyway! Oh dont worry Badger110, had this for a few years now but only just starting to attempt the work myself rather than pay a garage. More welcome to parenthood of trying to find cheap alternatives |
