I have a reasonably accurate fish weighing scale thing, spring scale type. Gas cylinders have the empty (tare) weight printed/stamped on them. Take away the tare weight from the current weight and that tells you how much gas you have left. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

According to the Caravan and Motorhome Club handbook a 6kg propane weighs 13kg full (Color Gas). So 13-6= 7kg empty. Sound like an Excel spread sheet coming on to me.
Isn't it strange that with the technology available, there isn't an app for gas and water weights, with the addition of a sensor or two? Peter |

Forget about indicators none of them works as well as they should, instead go for twin bottles with either an automatic or a manual change over device, that way if one tank runs empty you always have a spare. It's the sensor or two that makes it complicated as the standard bottles were never designed with them in mind. Given how many thousands that are in circulation, it's just not a problem worth solving. An auto changeover device is great but only as long as it gives some indication that it's made the change. Otherwise, you just end up with two empty bottles and no reserve. Poor some hot water over the bottle, it will cool down on the level where the gas sits. Works on bigger bottles in any case.

You're over complicating it. Every cylinder has it's empty weight stamped/printed on it. The weight/size of the cylinder is the weight of gas it will take. In your example of a 6KG cylinder just take the tare weight from the current weight and that's how much gas you have in kg. The cylinder you give as an example has a Tare weight of 7KG, if it weighs 13KG you have 6KG of gas (full) if it weighs 12KG you have 5KG of gas etc... http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

It’s worth noting that the tare (empty) weight on all Calor Gas branded cylinders is marked on an aluminium disc located under the valve and it is recorded in pounds and ounces. All other gas companies mark the tare weight in kilograms and it is usually printed on the top of the cylinder in front of the valve.
Some Calor cylinders have a float gauge fitted to the cylinder valve which gives an indication of the contents. However with the exception of the 5kg patio propane the others only show the contents from half full down to empty (6kg Lite and 13kg patio). ------------------------------------------------ 2002 TD5 90 HT County |

Talking of apps on smart phones to see the contents of a gas cylinder, have a look at “Primagaz Easyblue App” on YouTube (sorry I don’t know how to insert a link).
It works by tapping the side of the cylinder with a metallic object in front of your smart phone. The sound it makes determines the contents and this can then be viewed on the smart phone. ------------------------------------------------ 2002 TD5 90 HT County |
